I actually meant to try and keep this thread updated but lost my motivation after my job search stalled a bit.

After a year and a half out I've accepted a position as a trainee financial adviser. I've done various jobs along the way but I think this is one I'll stick with for a good while. It seems like once I've qualified (in a year) the money will be good but it's a job which interests me and its self employed so I'll have more control of my working week.
I've just highlighted a few points from your post.

Self-employed financial adviser is selling life insurance, pensions, critical illness policies etc for commission, yes?

I had a very brief indulgence with this profession for 2 weeks in 1990, mainly because there was a company called General Portfolio opposite my office in Brum where a load of blokes under 25 drove TVR S3s and Lotus Esprits. I walked out at the end of their two week introductory training course as even though I was only 19 I could see their high pressure sales techniques were completely wrong. Have a read of this before making the jump, if not too late.

Who is supplying your leads once fully self-employed? What do you do to pay the bills if you don't sell anything?

Respectfully, this is an absolute minefield of employment for a newbie, with massive ("self-employed") staff turnover.

I don't want to piss on your chips before you start but I really, really disliked what I saw in this industry.

Good luck!

Out of interest, what type of jobs have you seen for advanced drivers? I'm really struggling to find anything other than HGV driving. Which to be fair, I'm tempted with.

Just made enquires to get my CV sorted out as well.

There's properly one job within the police I'd like to try and thats surveillance, however I can't see how it would fit in with family life. But I'll look into it.
If you're considering other roles inside, what about NPAS?

Funny enough, they are looking for applications at the moment.

The shift pattern at the nearest one is st though. And the base is too far for a daily commute. Maybe if/when I move.

Which base is it and what is their current pattern? I think some of them are just 12 hr bases now so work around the "peak" periods

St Athan are recruiting at the moment. But they could be recruiting elsewhere as well.

If the base is under 45 minutes commute, it's a commute worth doing.
