Best perks of your job?
Discussion
In my last job it was a perk being able to travel on the A14 when it wasn't as busy.
The downside was that this was because I could start anytime before 8 and finish anytime after 6:30 and weekends are not as busy anyway. My boss' boss decided that since my department kept getting kicked out of the office when they wanted to lock up at 7pm, the best solution was to give me a set of keys, he was all heart that man. Plus at least come bonus time it was all taken into consideration (Not, the person who got the most was out the door the instant it hit 5:30).
It hasn't always been crap, in a previous company we built engines and, if I asked permission, I could take home scrapped but not scrap components, so I had a number of turbo chargers that I wanted to convert into jet engines, oh and 2 six speed gearboxes. Happy days. In the end I had to get shot of them as I ran out of room when I was building my car.

First time I've worked in local government and the only perk of the role is that the management are so poor from top to bottom that they're over-staffed (despite them crying that they're understaffed, hence them hiring me) that I'm able to spend 90% of my time surfing the net.
I knew councils had a bad reputation but nothing could have prepared me for the incompetence I've witnessed.
Thankfully it's a temp role.

But, there’s absolutely no way they can save any money without cutting services is there. They have told this lie so often that the public take it as truth, as if they believe that every public service is run at the bleeding edge of efficiency.I knew councils had a bad reputation but nothing could have prepared me for the incompetence I've witnessed.

Honestly it's so surreal. No one, and I mean no one, has any commercial thoughts about efficiencies or improvements to any service. They're far too busy slagging one another's department off, looking after number one having no consideration for their colleagues and avoiding any sort of communication whatsoever at all costs. Lacking drive, ambition and direction. Absolutely clueless from top to bottom and just coasting along happy that they're all in a job. Any job.
I can't see it getting any better either, as why would anyone with one iota of intelligence choose the public sector over private sector.

Because a lot of people care about making our "society" better. By that I mean Teachers, Nurses, Police Officers, Social Workers.Absolutely clueless from top to bottom and just coasting along happy that they're all in a job. Any job.

I agree with you that there is a lot of dross. i don't agree that it's all dross from top to bottom (I think you mentioned that you were temping there so it's surprising that you've managed to assess everybody's performance so quickly?)

You're right, I maybe should have been clearer, sorry. I was referring to the back office functions, rather than those who genuinely want (and do) make a difference. Are they still as "grade" conscious as when I had a temp role there 30 years ago? There was a bunch of contractors that had to share a PC yet there were permanent staff that had a PC on their desk gathering dust since they were a certain grade that qualified for a on but had no use for one.Absolutely clueless from top to bottom and just coasting along happy that they're all in a job. My dad also had a contract there, he rocked up to his office and there was no furniture, so he arranged to have a desk and chair moved from an empty office. One of the permanent staff walked in and got all twitchy going off about how dad couldn't have the desk with drawers as it was a grade (can't remember) desk, then he saw the swivel chair and nearly had a coronary.

Pretty much exactly how it is now. My dad also had a contract there, he rocked up to his office and there was no furniture, so he arranged to have a desk and chair moved from an empty office. One of the managers the other day was running round saying they need a grade <whatever it was> for a job they were doing. Seemingly whatever the grade is, you can do the job of another person on the same grade.
Anyway, I've derailed this topic enough so lets get back to the 'perks' rather than my observations
Subsidised canteen. A meal deal is £2.10 which is made up of a large main course and a large desert. Today it's mince pie, chips, beans and chocolate sponge and custard.
Banked hours. I can work extra hours and build them up to get an early finish if required.
Hours and and early finish on Friday. We work 37 hour weeks, I rarely do any extra and we finish at 2pm on Friday. I can even bank 2 hours up through the month and take a half day holiday to get all of Friday off.
Bonus. Working out of the UK office but now reporting directly to the Europe region means that my standard bonus has almost doubled with 200% returns on Europe figures compared to less than 100% UK. Nice little earner coming my way this month.
Work from home. Flexibility to use my home office if I'm just doing Skype all day or don't need any office based meetings.
Location. Nothing to do with my job but I happen to live 10 - 15 minutes away by car.
