Been on furlough since April and was invited along with another co-worker in the same boat to a furlough update meeting with my boss this morning.

Thought it was about returning to work...then up popped HR bod who wasn't on the original invite list......

You can probably work out the rest frown

Sorry to hear that. I’m working at the moment but I’ve got little to do so fearing the same. Hope things work out well for you.

That's proper y move by them IMO. Your boss who arranged / dealt with this should hang his head in shame.

Sorry to hear bud.

Dunno. In a way it’s stopped him worrying about the inevitable until the actual meeting.

Thanks folks.

Not good, but I'm in a position to weather it until things pick up - hopefully sooner rather than later, but I don't intend to sit around and have already applied for three jobs online today.

I have another 1:1 with HR next Thursday, and the carrot has also been dangled of an alternate role, which encompasses about 60% of what my colleague & I are doing already. It's not being advertsied externally, so really it's a straight fight between the two of us for ths one role (assuming he wants it, I have already declared my interest).

We'll see, but if I do get it, I'll be using it as a stop-gap & still looking elsewhere. If I don't, it's not the end of the world.

Another milestone today, as far as I can work out I’m the last of my friends still furloughed.

Many people here still off work?

My friend has been furloughed from a decent job... £80k a year plus another £10k or so bonus. Redundancy is basically guaranteed as the entire company is about to go under.

He is looking to work as a delivery driver or similar until Corona goes away then launch his own business in 12-24 months. He just wants something to do in the meantime and wants a low paid, low stress job.

He can't get anything at all though. I think he should start lying on his CV and play down his past jobs/experience/wages.

I don't think anyone is going to give a shop assistant or man in a van job to someone who used to earn close to 6 figures as they'll expect them to bail as soon as he gets a better offer.

He's not on linked-in and doesn't have any sort of CV that can be found on Google.

I've suggested to him to say he did work for the company he works for. But say he worked there as a delivery driver for a tenner an hour. If they check HR will only confirm dates anyway.

I reckon this will make him more employable for these low end jobs?

Still furloughed here.

Got a letter today sent to all staff (several thousand at sites all around the UK) offering enhanced redundancy. Great if you've been there a long time as it's an extra week of redundancy for each year you've been there, so I expect many of those nearing retirement will be applying for it.

No good for me so I've got to sit tight but, if I'm honest with myself, I think my role is at risk of being made redundant.

Hopefully not, but we'll see.

There are still staff off at my place, namely drivers and reception staff which we can do without and they are wanting to trim staff back so I foresee redundancies looming soon.

Still furloughed here, and extended until end-September. Also going through redundancy consultation, although my job is definitely no more. There is a role I can apply for, should I be interested but not certain I’ll get it. Have to wait until group consultation completes anyway, around mid August.

Well...I have done it, just signed the contract.

Same pay, more senior role, but with less hours and written in to the contract - 3 days a week from home, 2 in the office (which one way is 10 miles further, but over a week is quite a bit less).

A fair deal all in all, where I think employers have the upper hand atm in some areas. Equally applications for jobs have gone insane recently!

Starting next Tuesday, and yes I will be visiting the office to spend my first day there just to get to know the team (obviously socially distanced!)

Well done. thumbup

I've just had my status switched to flexi furlough, not yet been back in but each week I will be getting an update on when I might be required.

1st day of consultation today and my first day back after over 100 days of furlough.

3 people in my department and i expect one to go (me). 1 guy brought back two months ago, 1 guy brought back 1 month ago and as above me today. It just feels like a token gesture so they appear to be being fair. To be honest they are both older and more experienced/skilled than me so i can accept if that is the decision.

From what i can gather they will be paying the statutory redundancy. Question, is there scope to negotiate for more by offering to go? I'll be due 6 weeks wages, 6 weeks notice and 2 weeks holiday so not a great deal. But if I was offered 1.5/2x this amount to go early I would take it, can't see why the company would go for this though?

Reason for asking this is I keep reading that voluntary redundancy is often more lucrative than standard. But why is that when the company can just choose who they want to go and pay them a lower settlement. Hope this makes sense.

The company will give you the least they have to and will only do whats best for them, subject to your contract.

I wouldn’t suggest your idea, it gives them more of an indication that you are the right one to go.

Thank you, felt like a long road to this, but we are there.

Agreed I wanted some security written in, longer term the head of marketing has said there will be further clarification on home workers and office workers as such for the business.

The other benefit came later as well my insurance went down because of an occupation change with the new role.

Is an employer within their rights to put you on furlough then sub contract work out that you had been asked to do before being furloughed?

Don't see why not but can't make much sense.

Would imagine sub contracting out costs more than your employment cost?
