I have been living and working abroad for quite some time now. From Technical non technical trainer to Assistant after sales manager at importer/distributor levels and now Group after sales manager for a very large dealer group. Now I want to come home and bring with me all that knowledge, but the motor trade at home appear to be disinterested or even lethargic in speaking with me. Can anyone help me to understand this at all???

May be related to the worldwide pandemic going on?

I think the vast majority of people are predicting that before the end of the year there is going to be a recession/ economic crash to one degree or another depending on who you ask and the motor sector is likely to be hit particularly badly for it as most people will sit tight on whatever they have to get them around so it's not too surprising that there's no big desire from companies in the industry to be recruiting right now.

There are jobs; one just has to have a strategy and some flexibility with approach (and which job!).

Obviously there are jobs that are advertised; you need to nail the application process to ensure you’re shortlisted to interview. Happy to look over any CV you have been using.

Then there are jobs that have yet to either be advertised or even established. This is where networking and prospective applications come in to play. Don’t be afraid to drop in a prospective CV and covering letter to an organisation you’d genuinely look forward to working for (and that genuine enthusiasm needs to fly of the page when it’s read).

Finally, some say looking for a job is in itself a full time job; anything less than full on effort to secure that next role could result in disappointment. Just keep going!

Good luck!

Rog007, you sound like a man who knows what he's talking about, I respect that and really appreciate what you've said.

How would it be possible to take you up on your offer to have a quick squint at the c.v.? Perhaps even to pick your brains further, if you are agreeable and have the time to assist?

Pretty much exactly what I was going to post.

I too offer to review/edit a CV or have a chat with anyone who needs it. My background is Tech R&D / Tech Products and B2B marketing and I have reviewed countless CVs over the years. Anyone - Feel free to PM me.

Most recently, I found myself in a similar position (looking for a new job) and it can be really really demoralising - I left my last role at Christmas and thought I'd have a pick of the jobs before CV hit smile I had one big company tell me on the day of the final interview that all roles were on hold. I had another say that they would offer me the perfect job but now can't and I had numerous knockbacks when I *knew* I was the *perfect* fit as well was many who couldn't even be bothered to reply.

I've never applied to so many jobs ever before this and definitely saw job hunting as a 'full time job'. Networking is key; LI and contacting old colleagues as well as keeping recruiters onside is a job in itself. That said, I think you do need to be a bit choosy - there's little point in the scattergun approach or going after something that is not a great fit as it is way less likely that you'll get through with the increased competition that is around at the moment.

For me, I had a clear view of the 3/4 job types that I was going for and had a version of my CV specifically targeted for each of those roles. That then allowed me to easily customise the base CV (job type) to the specific company. It meant that tailoring my cover letter and CV to apply to a newly discovered role took about 90 mins all in. Several times, I also contacted in-house recruiters directly on LI as an introduction to try and get past the paper sift stage. I think this was time well spent.

There are green shoots - I have seen a fair number of new job postings in the last month or so when 6 weeks ago, there was nothing. I think in some industries (Tech being one of them) there are lots of companies looking to hire again after initially pausing.

Fortunately for me, I managed to get 3 offers during lockdown and started a new role fully remotely 3 weeks ago which I didn't think would happen so it can be done. Keep at it.

Rog, it said the same to me but then added it's for the first 24hrs of membership. Yesterday I was able to send you an email but today that function has been removed also. Perhaps it will reappear after a couple of days.
