Getting no where applying for roles

Back to applying next week.
I will be using some of the tactics mentioned, just not sure about calling the recruiter and asking about the role as they are likely to tell me it is all written down in the advert.
My 2 pence worth. I will be using some of the tactics mentioned, just not sure about calling the recruiter and asking about the role as they are likely to tell me it is all written down in the advert.
When I have been looking (admittedly mostly for contract roles) I have always given the agent a call an hour or so after I have applied. I found it helps as they tend to get a load of CV's come into their inbox and then have to sieve through them. If you call (and they talk to you) then you are forcing them to get your CV out of the pile to discuss it with you.
I have been put through for quite a few roles based on doing this. I would say though that I only do this for roles that I want/ feel that I have a good chance of getting.

I've always called the agent before sending a CV, it helps to find out what the job spec really is, a little more clarity on what "market rate" means and gives me some hints about how to tailor the CV to the role. When I have been looking (admittedly mostly for contract roles) I have always given the agent a call an hour or so after I have applied. It also means that my CV rarely ends up with agents that fishing, or have a job I'm not really interested in
I’ve realised that none of my friends and relatives change jobs as often as I do.
In the last 20 odd years I worked for one company for 13 years but my so called career meandered so I spent a time applying for other jobs. Finally I got a break and moved but the new company was awful so I moved again and found that my predecessors had all lasted less than a year before being sacked so I never felt very stable at my new new company and I kept my eye out for different jobs.
After 3 years the inevitable happened. I spent a couple of months looking for a job and retraining before contracting for two years where I was very happy.
That gig ended a month ago and since then I’ve been applying for jobs, have been contacted about jobs, been interviewing etc but have no one to share my experiences with.
I would keep a running commentary here but
a) I doubt anyone wants to hear the highs and lows of some random stranger on a forum
b) I don’t want to write too much and potentially give my identity away…

I feel for you, it's not an easy position to be in.
I was made redundant at the end of December and was petrified that I was coming onto the job market in the middle of a global pandemic.
I work as a Financial Consultant in Financial Services - effectively a Financial Adviser. I ended up getting contacted 3/4/5 times a day by recruitment consultants and had 3 job offers and a signed contract sorted by mid February.
I used barely any of my redundancy money and started my new role mid March. I am not saying all of this to try and say how great I am, I am leading to my conclusion.
Before I had an industry recognised professional qualification, I always found it more of a struggle finding a new job. I have been an Ops Manager, Sales and Marketing Manager, Call Centre Manager and a Police Officer = hard to put in a box.
The conclusion I arrived at, is that you have to make it as easy as possible for recruitment consultants to identify what you do and what you can do well.
I also think that having a certain set of letters after your name, makes it very easy for rec cons to spot you and know what roles you're suitable for.
So in a nutshell, make it very clear what your skills are early on. Always be pleasant and polite to every rec con who you come into contact with, as you never know when you may need their help.
I still get contacted once a week by a rec con on Linked In or by phone. I always reply to any message or call, despite the fact that I currently have no interest in a move - You just don't know what is around the corner.
Good luck

Thanks. I totally recognise the "no qualifications - can't be pigeon holed" feeling. When I worked at a large company I was a bit of a jack of all trades/project resource so couldn't say I was anything. After settling on one job it became easier to say what I was and therefore to move on.
Now I have passed several industry recognised exams I'm getting regular interviews, some more suitable than others - I'm learning to be more discerning and realistic and less desperate, but it's taking longer than expected to get a job.
I am finding the time scale of
- make contact
- wait a few days for a telephone screening to check I'm not a mumbling idiot
- wait another week for a Teams call
- wait another week for a second stage with a presentation to prepare for
- wait another week for a Teams call with a more senior manager
- wait a fortnight for a decision to be made
to be a bit tedious.
I'm available immediately. For many candidates they will have to make a decision, resign then work their notice, so you have to wonder how urgently the job needs to be filled.
Funnily enough, in a previous job a recruiter used to regularly call up cold calling to try and place candidates. I was always pleasant to him. 2 years later he got me a job, which he reminded me about after I'd accepted .

I’m getting fed up of the whole process tbh.
This morning I found out I was rejected for a job I had been through 4 rounds of interviews for. Apparently I couldn’t have answered the questions any better but was deemed a poor fit for the organisation. I’m taking that to mean too old. I’m a bit annoyed but had been having doubts about them anyway. They’ve got my 6 month strategy to work from. bds.
Not much in the pipeline otherwise. I had a first round sift on Friday but haven’t heard back yet although the agent says they move fast. Interesting company. And I had a first round yesterday but the job and company isn’t really for me.
I’d better revise my CV slightly and put it on the job boards. That usually gets me loads of calls from agents.

Doesn't make it any easier, but it could have been a ploy to get you to do a bunch of work for free. I've had a similar experience.... The company in question went out of business 12 months later, piss poor management. This morning I found out I was rejected for a job I had been through 4 rounds of interviews for. Interesting regarding recruitment agencies and it not being transparent who or what exactly you are applying for.
The reason I say this is that I am the interviewer for my dept for entry level jobs and sometimes I get people through for interview that can't even tell me basic details about the job.
This for the "what are your expectations of the role?" question.

Local to me there are some well know very bad employers, the agencies lie to candidates to get them to go there. The reason I say this is that I am the interviewer for my dept for entry level jobs and sometimes I get people through for interview that can't even tell me basic details about the job.
