Savings also may not make a massive difference to contributions based JSA.
what's the threshold of savings before they give you JSA?And yeah you have a designated centre depending on your home postcode.
ETA - it's worth doing for NI reasons and, as mentioned Council Tax relief. You might also qualify for housing benefit too.

Council tax is worth a punt, but everything else looks at your savings and tells you to sod off.
JSA is means-tested.
Play about with this :
http://www.entitledto.co.uk/
Put in more than 16k savings and it says you're entitled to nothing, put in 10k and it's 48 quid a week, 6k and under it's the full 64 or whatever it is now.

On the phone to them now...........
As someone who has been through all this palaver recently, it works like this:
There are 2 types of JSA - contribution based and income based.
If you've paid your NI contribution for the previous year (i.e. been in employment) then you are entitled to the £70 a week contribution based JSA regardless of savings. This lasts for 182 days (6 months) then stops and you need to apply for income based JSA (as you do if you don't have an NI contribution record). Income based is the means tested one and, as stated, you get nowt if you've got over £16K in savings. It's possible that the working status of your OH may also affect this but I'm not too sure on that point.
It is worth signing on anyway to gain NI credits which effectively maintian your continuous NI contribution history.
HTH!

Will add that it needs to be class 1 NI contributions that give the full JSA for 6 months, but be aware that you can then sit on your ass for 13 weeks and do nowt but show them an email saying you are looking... after 13 weeks they can force you to apply to jobs AT THE GOING RATE YOU WERE ON... so if you say you were on 50k, they will only make you go for jobs that are worth 50k instead of the security jobs on 15k... so tell them your last take home pay otherwise you could be forced to do crappy jobs. There are 2 types of JSA - contribution based and income based.

deevee - cheers for the post, is that gospel?
Its as I remember it.The working status of the partner is what scuppers most people with Income Based JSA.
Apparently I would have got IbJSA if 'er indoors worked for less than 16 hours per week, pretty much even if she earned £10K an hour.
But as she works more than 16 hours per week at significantly less than £10K per hour then you're a converted statistic.
Its a system that rewards entirely the wrong type, essentially.
