Whilst it is ideal to let your employers know what is happening, sometimes it is the last thing on your mind. As long as when he returns to work he informs you why he was absent, I think that covers him.

Be careful about issuing warnings though as it would go against you at an employment tribunal.

It's not ideal as an employer but I think I would have taken it that he wouldn't be back until further notice.

There is certainly no call for giving warnings etc however that is dependant on the employee showing a little courtesy towards the company by sending a text or making a call either themselves or getting someone anyone really to call the office and let them know roughly how bad the situation is and when he will be in touch about getting back to work.

To not do so is unacceptable. You cannot leave your company hanging and potentially losing money due to your absence as they need to organise cover.

They excuse of his dad may be at deaths door doesnt wash im sorry to say. He may not wish to leave his side but im sure he could ask a nurse to call or a family friend anyone really and let the office know he wont be back till x.

Common courtesy. As stated if his wages were late he would be all over the company about it and wouldnt be happy to be ignored why should the company be put in the same position.

Oddly enough, I have last week's wages here because he hasn't collected them.

Still no contact.

This may be a bit out there but if you know where he lives you could try popping round to his place to hand him his wages and check how his dad and therefore he is. Make it your priority to make sure he is aware that you are concerned about his dad and Try be as sensitive as possible and ask him if he can give you some idea how long you need to arrange cover for at the same time and ask him to keep you up to date as to when he might me back.

I know where he lives, but he's away in Yorkshire (where his dad is) we think.

That's probably the best indication you'll get of where his mind is currently focused.

You could discipline him for not getting in contact, but I suspect the effect on the morale of the rest of the staff would be significant.

Be a good bloke about this.

Go round with his wages in hand, and say you thought you ought to drop them off. If you catch him hanging out of the back of the babysitter, sack him. If you find him in mourning, you'll know and you'll be the best boss ever.

Sorry chaps, but no fee is payable unless you pay attention to detail!

I said he was away in Yorkshire and we're in Devon. No way am I putting his wages through a letterbox, or come to think of it driving to Yorkshire with them - that really is taking the good boss bit too far!

Sorry but a bill for two 6min units is still owing to myself as i suggested it before you posted that he was too far away from you in Yorkshire??? so advice was clearly noted and considered . However out of the goodness ) of my heart i will donate half to soovy its not his fault he's slow. In fact i think it could be my bit for charity for the year.

Definitely not!

He's missed two shifts to date with not a word. Caring boss is wearing thin!

If his dad had a heart attack then it may run in the family. If you fire him you may kill him .....

Call him up, ask how things are. To not give you any notice (even if it's a text, an email, a carrier pigeon...) is a bit of a piss take to be honest.

I'm still thinking if his father is dead as much of a "piss take" as it may be to not inform folk what is going on it ain't right to add to his misery
