Hi all,

On behalf of my step dad.

He was called into work this morning and, spoek to by 3 senior people and told he was being suspended on full pay due to an issue with an email.

He forwarded on an email to some colleagues and someone outside of the company. This email was the "can you spot the duck" one doing the roudns which has a duck, cicrcled in the background and a pair of boobs in the foreground. Pretty stupid I agree.

This email was sent to him from another work colleague within the same company as him and, as have millions more. Its an ongoing thing there and is rife amongst all the staff, always has been.

What to do? Suggestions?

Although he's broken the rules it does seem awfully petty. I can't help but think that this is being used as an excuse because of something else? Maybe a boss has it in for him etc?

The email was sent to someone who's part of what could be considered a competitor company which might be why it was flagged up on whatever monitoring system they use. Rambling now...

They need to get rid of people. They want to get rid of him.

He's just given them the reason they need.

Start looking for another job.

I can't believe people still do this stuff (I know they do, I get loads of them).

Is the company treating everyone involved the same? If there's history of this, what have they done in the past?

Shouldn't everyone in the company on the same e-mail trail face the same punishment?

So the colleague who sent it to him has not been treated the same way? did that colleague only send it to him? (no proof, but was he the only recipient in the 'to' field when he got it?) Perhaps management are seeing it as a more serious offence as he has distributed it to a group. Where there any women in the group he sent it to?

I remember someone getting a bking at a company I worked for for sending this reasonably well-known one:

(WARNING MAY NOT BE WORKSAFE - WAIT TILL YOU GET HOME - NO NUDITY THOUGH)

he should know on what grounds he has been suspended

is it merely the content? if so then the person who sent it to who must also be suspended otherwise it is victimisation

if it is 'being in touch with the enemy' and he is the only 1 doing it then it is understandable why only he's suspended. They will now be checking his email history to see if something relating to work has been passed over.

If he's innocent of the latter then he should be going back to work without much harm done. if he's guilty of the latter he should get his coat.

If it's purely the boobs then he should send in a grovelly letter saying how had acted inappropriately and had momenterily got caught up in what used to be 'a bit of fun', but he does know better and realize that times have changed etc.
First offence = warning, which if not repeated will soon expire.

1st step is he needs to know exactly what crime he's up for.

This is what gets me here - somehow in the world of computers, you're not given a chance. forward on one mail, and thats it, you're out. Surely it should just be a mark on his record? And this is assuming he's seen and signed an accetable usage policy?

Oops, Hindsight being 20/20 a private account would have been the one to use.
Is he actively looking for work?

Well, if it was (and still is) a customer, and he declined...what's wrong with that? Sounds like a good thing, unless there was a long discussion thread in the email.

It would be unfair if that's what happened, but as usual with these threads the OP was not exactly fact-filled

It was the duck/boobs email. He doesn't recall signing that policy but no doubt did, he's goingbto check on that.

Why is it that with a lot of employment issues at work, IT related infringements skip the idea of first giving you a chance - second or possibly third infringement and your out on your arse.

It's the illusion part that I don't get. I can see the tower, and the boobs.

There's no illusion. Many men do not notice the tower.

Ahh

Maybe better if it didn't say tower in the title then.

Or does it mean I'm ghey?
