2 Jobs , 2 different lives. Which is better
Discussion
Few years ago i used to work somewhere really warm and nice, the pay was crap and I was always broke but I loved my work. I didn't have a 47in LCD tv with Sky HD, I didn't own a fancy pants car just a little 50cc moped which got pushed more than I used to ride it. Life was simple but good. However this job was only seen as a little job to see me through my extended holiday. Main thing here was I was happy as a pig in st!
I now have a decent job that pays well but I hate it. I am still just as broke as I was in my crap job though I do have a fancy pants car, a 47in LCD TV with SKY HD and other trappings of modern life. Yet this position in life is deemed more acceptable than my last job, its the sensible thing to do according to many, my parents included.
I just don't get it myself. Why is this? Is this some kind of idealoogy that we should go through life miserable as fk, paying cash to the man constantly, have all of lives glittery st and all work "Sensible" jobs and push ourselves to keep up with the neighbours?

Perhaps change your approach to spending?
I recently read the Rich Dad, Poor Dad book. yes its essentailly sales patter and probably not all true but the essence of the book- accumulating assets in order to give financial freedom, has given me a new direction and goals.
See your better paying job as a medium term solution to acheiving something better, something you would love to do- start a business? pay off the mortgage so that the leser pay of the fun job is not an issue etc etc. Sorry if that sounds like some life coach b**sh** but, just my 2p and it has made me look at the bigger picture....if only i can stay outside the classifieds on here.... !

Works for me.
Why? Why not find a job that I like and love rather than a high paid job that I will eventually find annoying. Its this ideaology that everyone has. Shouldn't I just find a job that I love regardless of how well it pays? But low paid jobs usually have a st life style attached (at least in this country). Works for me.

Looking at your post, the problem you have is clear. When trying to balance work and life, it's inevitable that we get it wrong sometimes - it's part of the human condition. Although hindsight offers the benefit of 20:20 vision, my advice to you would be to replace the 47" LCD TV with a 50" Panasonic plasma
Its a very personal choice, I'm in a similar boat to you, I have thought about chucking it all in to go and work somewhere pleasant, probably not for much money but I really don't think it would matter as long as you were comfortable. Commitments here keep me at home
The issue is that people are always so worried about the future (kids, retirement etc..) that they forget about now, today. I think we often forget that one day we're actually going to die, that this all ends and we see some never ending future where we own our own home and have a good pension as our target. I fear that looking back I'll regret not taking the chance, its a constant push/pull battle.
I think too though that its all too easy to look back at those fun times, when we were surrounded by friends as great days, but if you actually went back to that, would you miss the trappings of 'wealth' and would it be the same without those friends?
I personally think that if I could work in some car related industry (or own a business), somewhere with a pleasant climate probably mainland Europe, have a small mortgage and a little sports car (Mk1 MX5 would do) I'd be a very happy man.

I think this is the problem. I earn reasonable money and enjoy what I do but what I absolutely abhor is the whole keeping up with the Jones' thing or trying to outdo everyone. I don't understand why people do it but it's everywhere.Edited by carl carlson on Monday 8th November 12:56
Life isn't about keeping up but doing what the hell you want. Living like this is souless and the root problem of 90% of the population. fk it all and just do your own thing.
If you don't like your job then do something else. It really isn't rocket science. Is it ? Ultimately only you are responsible for your own happiness so why choose to be unhappy ? Makes no sense to me

whatever you do, the grass will always be greener somewhere else ...or so you will think from time to time
so do what you think is best and that you want now...then in 6 or 12, or 48 months, re-assess things
as long as you take responsibility for your choices and learn all the time, you cant go wrong

Two options, first is change jobs and your life completely this could end up with you poor and happy or poor and pissed off. The second is to make your life outside work as good as you can, find a hobby you enjoy, sailing, rock climbing, model making what ever and imerse yourself into it in your free time.
