Just had an urgent one come in for 2 techs, electrically biased (16th/17th edition) with 6 months siemens offshore cable experience. I've already found one but the other slot is open. Start date is immediate.

Escargot - I can be there first thing monday morning to gain all the offshore experience they will give me

ETA - not to be pedantic or anything but equipment of mobile and fixed offshore installations are excluded from the scope of BS7671 (16th/17th edition etc) :0

Yep, it's not because it's a requirement of the job, it simply demonstrates relevant experience (albeit onshore).

Maersk training 2-3 totals 28hrs learning, I wonder if if would be worth trying to put a package together to include basic H&S or offshore/turbine rescue or evacuation?

Just a passing comment. Escargot, I think it's great that you are taking time to try and get the PH boys a start in the renewables sector. Especially providing detailed responses to the many questions you have been asked.

Good idea. Lets wait and see if Escargot comes up with anything UK wise or if he could get some more bodies. If we got ten I reckon Maersk would do us a good deal. Saying that a round for ten lads in Denmark probably costs more than this training course

I've been working in our Manchester office a couple of times over the past couple off weeks with the construction department, including the operations managers and girls resource management girls.

They are definetely still directly recruiting for installation and commissioning technicians so keeps your eyes peeled for direct routes in too as you will be put through all the basic training for free in your first 6 weeks in Newcastle.

I havent given up applying with siemens by any means but It seems I dont seem to be able to get an interview out them, despite installing/commissioning/maintaining 3ph automated rotating machinery for over 15 years. Working at heights, motors/gearboxes/pumps/hydraulics/pneumatics/control panels & PLC systems (Siemens S5/S7 & Siemens HMI's) 16th/17th edition, test & inspection quals yadda yadda yadda......... I dont know if its a CV formatting issue, or not enough specifics in my CV - it could even be an age thing at 35 they might be wanting people with an potential extra 10 years in them.

I regularly check the siemens jobs site, and subscribe to relevant renewables/wind turbine alerts etc so its a case of keep applying atm, although if spending 2k on training then I'd also do that all day long - If I was after getting into the offshore oil/gas game I would need to do my BOSIET & Compex electrical certs just to really get my CV out of the bin pile and into the read pile, which would cost something similar to what the swt 2-3 might work out at ( I hope !!)

where are you based mate? this might be the issue.

also this can't be anything to do with age as I personally know of a 50 year old who got a job recently on the service side and he has had a fair few pies in his time aswell, think they had to get the extra strong ropes in for his evac training

Remember the retirement age has been scrapped and state pension is moving to 67. That means you effectively have 32 years service before retirement. I think you'd more than return their investment in you in that time.

Do you have a contact as Siemens at all? I might be able to help with that once I know where you are based.

I'm based in the north west mate (cheshire) about 12/15 miles away from siemens manchester offices

Travelling isn't a problem - i regularly do 2-3.5+hr commutes to different sites, and to me a local job is anything under 90 mins away. This is on a daily basis so for a service tech position travelling 3-4hrs+ return journey once every 4 days would be a god send! Although, i'm not sure on the accommodation side of things when working offshore on a 4on/4off 12hr rotation. Install techs I wouldnt have thought should make any difference as the positions were uk wide on/offshore.

I did request feedback etc from the person who I had been contacting there, but as yet have heard nothing back. Its probably safe to say things would be pretty manic there atm with new intakes etc.

I'll definitely see what I can do chaps. If it's something you seriously want to do, I'll get in touch with some lads on my books and see if they want to come in on it with you all.

I might be going out to Denmark myself in the next couple of weeks as it happens and If I do, i'll go and see the maersk facility.

are there any Siemens turbines near you though? The two biggest onshore they have are in Scotland and that's a fair distance for a commute!

Only Wales and entire Irish Sea.

Location is unlikely to be the issue. I've met techs working out of Wells next the Sea that live in Rhyl... Similarly I've met techs working in Mostyn and Barrow that live in Cornwall.
