A need to get of the UK - but how?

just introduce yourselves and let people adapt to you don't try to force or change people!
Thanks, very helpful. Our discussions so far have got us to the point that we would acknowledge the fact that we were making a permanent move to another country and would have to accept it for what it is, good or bad. We would have to be careful to avoid drawing comparisons with the UK, or changing things to make them 'better' just to bring them into line with what we're used to.
Still got a lot of thinking and homework to do, as well as making a few trips out there to see what it's like.

Consider this: As I understand it, when you start a job in the UK you get 20+ days holiday, here in Canada we get 10 days after one year. Depending on the employer it could take 3-5 years to get to 15 days holidays then another 3-5 years to get to 20 days. Check with the Employment Standards Code of your province of choice. The UK has a lot more statutory holidays than we do here in Canada. On the plus side, we work one hour a day shorter. I live in Alberta, but I don't think it is much different across Canada.
Also consider that in Alberta, Saskatchewa, Manitoba and Ontario the winters can be cold and long - racetracks are closed during that time and they are few and far between. There is not much passion for cars and the cars are (for the most part) big and boring.

We're looking at it very seriously, and if we sold our UK house and recovered the equity I reckon we could pretty much live mortgage-free in Canada.Have also been looking at buying a plot of land and building a house (or having a house built for us... ).
I'm confused, if you are in a company that is going nowhere why move out of the country? The grass is always greener...? I have lived in the Caribbean, Canada and here and I am often amazed how people here don't appreciate what you have in the UK. Why not try and change job, improve your life situation here (or somewhere a bit closer)?

The focus in this thread seems to be on property prices in Canada. While they seem very appealing, it must be remembered that everything is relative. Property in the more affluent cities and major centres such as Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto, Montreal to name but a few, is very expensive. This is where well paying jobs are more plentiful which is no different a situation in the UK. Canada also has a higher income tax rate than the UK and some provinces have three levels of sales tax - Goods and Services Tax, Provincial Sales Tax and Harmonized Sales Tax. While this may not equate to taxes in the UK, again, everything is relative. It all depends on what you are looking for. Do your research and ask lots of questions.
