Hi folks, basically I'm in a bit of a rut.

I'm currently working for Sainsburys part time, not earning much and struggling to pay my bills at the minute which is getting me down so I need a change of job.

I've looked over the job centre website and applied for a few jobs, (security guard, other sales jobs etc) yet never heard anything back from any job I've applied for (applied for Caterpillar recently but never heard back from them either frown ) so this is a bit of a desperate plea.

A bit about me

No skills unfortunately but willing to learn
I can drive and have a clean license (had it just over 3 years)but my current car isn't on the road yet (project car that's taking its time due to lack of funds frown )
Located in Co.Durham and within bus/driving distance of Peterlee, Durham, Hartlepool, Stockton and willing to drive further once my car is on the road
I love cars and enjoy working on them
I'm computer literate and have played with HTML/PHP/VB .NET in the past which I enjoyed but didn't really do anything interesting

I'd consider any full time job if anyone knows of an employer looking for someone that is willing to work the hours and learn new things.

The downside is I'm currently relying on buses to get around and we all know what Arriva buses are like.

Thanks for reading

Andrew.

Cant afford to do stuff for free but if I could I would do stuff for the dogs trust or an animal charity for sure.

I signed up for the armed forces when I was 17 and didn't pass RSC frown

Was in Cat Peterlee ?, tbh most jobs there get lots and lots of applicants, don't be downhearted you didn't get a reply. (I used to work for them, but not at that site)

I would try cold calling companies, some jobs never make the job centrex/job sites.

Would you work in a factory for example?, if yes make a list of all the ones locally and call the HR department, keep calling them every month or so.

I have a bank loan of £2000 (which I seriously regret now) which is basically it excluding the usual rent and car insurance, although I still live with my mam I cant not pay her.

Yeah it was Cat in Peterlee mate, I wasn't expecting a reply from them as I only have 5 years experience working for Bells/Sainsburys so my CV isn't flowing with the experience they will most likely be looking for.

I never thought about the cold calling companies (not really a job I would enjoy but at this moment in time I'll take literally anything) but its an idea so thank you, and yes I would work in a factory it would probably suit me as I'm quite sick of having to be nice to customers on the shop floor etc lol

Thanks for the ideas Andy smile

Head down to the job centre, they will give you a list of agencies, send your cv to all of them,

Or try getting on one of the management training programs with sainsbury, tesco, adds ?

I have been out of work for 3 months now since moving back up north from London, applied for probably 300 jobs and have first interview today !!! Just sitting in the car waiting to head in.

The best way to go is to send your cv to everyone eventually someone will pick it up and you will get lucky, the best bit of advice I could give is don't get down about it, as long as tour prepared to get up and work something will come up eventually.

Don't just rely on the job centre.

Get your CV online at every online job site - reupload it every week at least to keep it at the top of the pile.

Make it a full time job outside of your part time work to keep searching and applying for jobs - never get lazy or complacent about this. You may not hear back from 50, but you only need to get one...

Register with every single temp agency you can find, and get to know the agents at each place on first name terms. Call them every week, keep a list of what you last spoke about for small talk, then they will remember you when they get a CV through.

I was in the same position at you at your age in the last 90's recession. Sheer persistence meant that I found a job within 2 weeks, and that was before internet job boards were available as well.

Never stop, never give up and keep going.

It's mind numbing and soul destroying but there are plenty of contact centres within your commuting distance.

Contact centres always recruit, get a job with one of them. You'll get a job with a starting salary of approx. £15k and they won't be too annoyed when you leave 3 months later when something better turns up.

It's an easy £1k a month in your pocket and there will be plenty of young impressionable (corruptible) eye-candy to enjoy whilst you're there.

As already mentioned the quickest route to a full time job up in this part of the world would be call centre work, Barclays and Orange seem to be fairly regularly recruiting new staff around Peterlee and Sunderland.

Use the job centre website daily and rather than search for vacancies within x miles of your location search for them in all of the towns around you with a 10-15 mile radius set. It throws up different results for each town doing it that way.

Some kind of voluntary work with your free time is a great way to build your CV, don't view it as working for free view it as broadening your employability. I'd look more favourably on someone who had more than one skill set that had been used and there are loads of ways you could help out while helping yourself.

These both look to be interesting opportunities to get a start in a new career which will lead to a reasonable job in the next few years too, and AFAIK both would be available in the North East.

Other than that if you can sell yourself well look further afield for work and consider moving to where the jobs are.

That's some pretty good advice in there mate and if you could do it in the 90's when there were no internet job boards etc it makes me wonder why I'm struggling to find a new job and how some people struggle to find a job, although now a days a lot of company's require people to have qualifications in this that and the other.

Going back to college is something I'm considering and should really look into further.

I'm used to mind numbing and soul destroying work lol have you ever had to stand on a till for 5 hours serving people that have no manners? It gets pretty mind numbing having to be polite to these people lol

If I remember right N-Power pays ok but apparently really is soul destroying, but I'll apply anyway if it'll help me pay my bills off (and maybe save up for some throttle bodies lol I need some fun in my life)

That is a better way to look at doing voluntary work than the way I do, and as I do have plenty of free time I could take some voluntary work up, I'll look into that. I looked at them jobs you posted (thanks) and they require people with GCSE grades of C+ which I don't have frown (I was so close too frown )

No problem, you sound fairly young so perhaps you could look into getting a few GCSEs or something part time at college that would help you in the future.

If you find the right place volunteering can be great for your career (and some places recruit staff from volunteers) and on your CV makes you seem like the kind of person who gets up and does things rather than waiting for them to drop into his lap.

Best of luck finding something better than what you have.

I'm 24 mate, I'm not sure what kind of volunteer work would appeal to me, an animal charity is the only thing I can think of that really interests me (dogs mainly) but you do make a good point.

I think that's the key, don't be shy to apply each time they advertise, the reality is with the number of applicants you have a chance they just pass you by.

Is your cv up to date and making the most of what you have ?

I know this is short notice but just found out that there is a jobs day at ST James Park on today, starts at 10 am !! I'm heading up there now !

Mostly working abroad, but most of the call centres mentioned in a earlier post are there also, swell as a lot Construction companies, apparently a lot of trainee management schemes on offer.

If you can may be worth trying to get up there, would have posted earlier but just fond out it's happening myself.

Lost Boy, have you considered Nissan at Sunderland. They have peaks and troughs of demand, but during one of their peaks they can recruit large numbers in a short space of time. I know of a few people who work there. It can be physically demanding, but pay seems pretty decent with very well paid overtime.

(Edited to add, just seen its already been mentioned in the thread)

Yeah I know of a couple of lads up there, I heard it can be demanding and often quite boring, but for the money they're on I wouldn't complain lol plus its cars, which I enjoy working on anyway. Going to apply online when I get in from work.
