My daughter is applying for a job and they want her to apply in writing with salary expectations notice period etc etc.

What is she supposed to put for salary expectations ? in line with current pay scales or suggest a wage she thinke fits the job. I find this to be a strange question especially as it is for a receptionist position not a city banker or shipping magnet !

Any suggestions grateful.

I've had this from some stty customer service roles in the past. They generally don't mean anything. Just advise her to state the market rates and she'll hopefully be fine.

Go onto somewhere like Monster or TotalJobs, find equivalent positions and benchmark against them? Maybe go in slightly lower depending on how keen she is on the role?

The more menial the position, the more ridiculous the interview requirements generally. Most MDs seem to be interviewed on the golf course, most shop assistants seem to need to sit a 4 hour exam.

Probably depends on the size of the company. If small they may use it to hire the cheapest staff, if large they may more use it to try and understand whether the candidate have a grasp of reality and have some common sense.

I wouldn't worry too much about this. As said above; market rates or quote low to average similar salaries to secure the role. I assume the salary for the role was advertised? Once in and doing a god job, then the issue over pay rises can be addressed. This question is only normally necessary if they're keen to steal you from an existing role and have to match your expectation (normally current salary plus 20%).

Hahah - from what my wife says about their applicants, a huge amount of them seem to expect ridiculous salaries. smile

Cheers for the answers, salary not advertised so Im going to ring and find out posing as an applicant. Salary should be advertised with the job description in my humble opinion..

I wouldn't do that. Too easy to get caught out one way or another. Why not get said daughter to call herself and ask? Much safer and correct IMHO.
