How to justify/explain underperformance?
Discussion
Just wanting to gain some input really.
Jan and Feb were really good months, my store finished on average @ 105% of our target and all kpi's hit.
Cue March's target coming through and being a circa 30% uplift on Feb target (most other stores received an uplift of 3-5%)
We have continued at the same run rate as previous months, meaning that we are missing target by a large margin.
I'm not one to complain about targets, so just went on and went for it. All of ny team have hit their personal targets, but the store is missing the total target..
Anyway, the point is that I will have a meeting with my regional manager to explain the performance and really can't think of what justification I can use. The only reason we've missed target this month is because of the huge uplift that we never received the business to cover.
I don't want to use that as my only defence as, well, the old tagline is that targets aren't an excuse.
My boss is a level headed decent bloke but doesn't suffer fools gladly and wouldn't take me just blaming target increases for underperformance...
Productive input is encouraged please.

You havent underperformed. You have kept your performance on track with your nominal mean performance indicator. If all your staff hit their performance indicators, if you have hit your performance target then the obvious error is in the overall store target. Quite simply there was nothing in your inventory of weapons that would have allowed you to achieve a 30% performance uplift in 1 month.
My boss's view is, and has always been 'target is target'. He sets them and complaining/challenging it is seen as weakness and giving up.
The company is very target and performance based, and when you're set a target there is literally no point questioning it as it won't be changed...
My thoughts are to goto the meeting not focusing on last month but instead to concentrate on what changes will be made to raise performance in April instead...

Bullet point style for you.
Your targets are wrong.
Your boss is a dick
You should be getting a bonus for surpassing the target by so much for the last 3 months, not getting reprimanded for not keeping it up.
You should never have been given new targets inline with freak unsustainable growth in sales. Their could have been many factors in the freak figures (new product on the market etc etc) but they are clearly freak.

have him explain the logic behind the 30% uplift. it sounds like a figure plucked out of someone's arse rather than a realistic increase based on market info.
say you didn't complain in march as a target is a target and it's good to aim high. show how you've improved since feb and that you are still hitting a net 5% [or whatever] month on month improvement. say that A/B/C has got you so far you can't see how you will hit the target without X/Y/Z.
job jobbed. if that's not good enough then nothing will be.

I would agree but with every other store getting seemingly realistic uplifts there must be some logic behind it.OP - This may be way off the mark but has your store been underperforming recently? Does your above average uplift bring you back into line with other stores in real terms?

Unfortunately the manager at that time was removed from the company shortly after for, er, not quite upholding the values of the company shall we say...
I can see that they have simply based the target based on a historical performance figure, which was almost completely fabricated.
I will be asking why my store was given such q high target, but I think I need to be ready to take the proverbial ass reaming and attack next month with 100% enthusiasm...

Phones4u by any chance??
Remember having some interesting conversations around targets with my boss back in the days.... concentrate on the other kpi's so you've hit all you can except GP target. Smile through all the bullst at the end of the month and then nail it again next month when it drops to more realistic levels....
Seems a strange month to have a hike in target - were there any external reasons as to why it was higher last year hence why you've been turned over this year??
Guessing if all your staff hit their connection targets etc then the argument will be you're selling the wrong deals or giving away to much discount....

...............Start wobbling and make overtones of being bullied, victimised and ask for a copy of the company grievance policy so you can weigh up your ET options.
He'll either:
i) Start back-peddling
ii) Shat himself and see you as his 'best mate' in this 'joint effort', or
iii) Be over you like a rash for the foreseeable, or
iv) Fire you
(If it reaches (iii) I'd advise you collate some evidence before option (iv) is invoked in readiness for the Tribunal which stands a good chance of a settlement (given that it costs you fk all) or a very good cahnce of winning)
