Hi guys,

I'm new to the forum but have been an avid fan of pistonheads for years now and am constantly looking for what I can trade my beloved bmw e30 325i in for but never quite have the heart to do so.

Anyway, I wanted to ask for your help if possible. I have been working in recruitment within the IT banking sector for 3 years now. Prior to that I had been in sales for 2 years after originally completing a degree in transport and product design. Yes, I sold my soul and went into sales instead of design.

Now I'm eager to try and find a way back into the automotive sector that utilises my background in design alongside my commercial sales/people skills. In essence I want a job I actually enjoy! The money is good in recruitment but I'm purely living for the weekends at the moment. I'm thinking perhaps marketing but not really too sure. Am sure the design ship has well and truly sailed by now but if anyone has any suggestions it would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Nick

Quite a few guys I work with in Automotive Design came from Product Design so it's a common route I think. I know the industry is recruiting at the moment, get your CV in!

Working for the OEM in the Design office I spend a lot of time talking to suppliers about contracts and costs, surely your experience would be of use in that kind of role?

ETA, what about looking at working for a tier 1 supplier on the commercial/sales type side who need a knowledge of the product/part and deal with the OEM? Many know a lot about the product/part but have little sales knowledge and many know a lot about sales/commercial side but little about the product/part.

Might be worth speculatively sending CV's to companies HR departments?

Hi Cyder,

Thanks a lot for your reply. To be honest however, selling parts doesn't really do it for me in terms of using my creative side. In terms of sales, I earn a good wage from doing what I'm doing but would be happy to earn less for the sake of job satisfaction. Tempted to send my CV to HR departments but dealing with HR most days I know a lot of CVs end up on the pile and don't actually go anywhere. In my case it might be even worse since I'm not completely sure as to what job title I'm looking for.

More than anything I want a job that I enjoy and can get properly established within but given the fact that me and the mrs are looking to a buy a house next year, I need to ensure my salary isn't too bad in order to get a mortgage.

Basically I want to have my cake and eat it....

Any more advice is massively welcome.

Nick

No worries about the hijack. I'd like a link too!

Out of interest, what skills do you have?... I still currently work as an IT/Banking recruiter you know ;-)

You're facing a situation shared by millions of people; might I be better off doing something different? Many people have those thoughts at some point in their working lives. Most do nothing about it as with time and of course a little effort they move along in their organisation which brings them security and hopefully added reward and job satisfaction. For some, they are prepared to take the risk and move to a new organisation and even in to a new sector. In the current climate (and alongside your property aspirations), if you still feel so strongly that you need to move, then I would make a call to some of the specialist recruiters who cover the sector you are interested in and have a chat with them. They will know the Market and your marketability and will hopefully give you an honest view. Good luck!

Hi Rog007,

Thanks for the email. Am currently on the case but trying to keep my on the ball still whilst at my current work place. We shall see but hopefully I can get some decent ins soon as it is causing me some distration and would rather leave on a good note even though the sector I'm looking at is very different to the one I'm in now.
