1M Coupe DMS remap ..........Any experiences ?
Discussion
I've just seen a piece in EVO p141 about a remap by DMS in Southampton.
I wondered if anyone had any experience of the remap and for the 1M Coupe, and I'd appreciate any comments/advice/feedback. (Please!)
My car is about to go in to for the 1200 mile first service> Still not unleashed it's full performance yet, as I have kept it under 4.5 thousand revs to date. It may be quick enough, once I get up the rev range a bit.
Also:- does anyone know if the dealership will get upset if I provide and ask them to fill the car with Castrol Magnatec from now on ?
I'm old fashioned and like to change the oil annually, and never do more than 6ooo miles a year.
Any comments on either gratefully received !
Happy New Year !

I too am tempted by a remap, either DMS or AC Schnitzer, both produce around 400bhp. I am concerned about the warranty issue though, it would be great if you could put it back to standard for services etc like the bluefin type devices. There are a couple of guys on here who have the DMS remap and have had great things to say about it. Check out the other 1M thread, I think theres info in there.

Assuming the 1 M is recommended to be run on the same oil as all other modern M cars, Castrol TWS, why would you want to use a different oil?I'm old fashioned and like to change the oil annually, and never do more than 6ooo miles a year.[/b]

If you wish to change the oil annually, do so, I do on my DD but I do not use a non recommended oil just because I'm changing the oil every year as opposed to every two years.
You'll be the one getting upset if you use a non recommended oil and then have an engine issue and find out your engine warranty has been voided by your non recommended oil.
Don't do it, there is a lot more to engine oils than viscosity.

The 10w60 Castrol oil is only for proper M engines. If you wish to change the oil annually, do so, I do on my DD but I do not use a non recommended oil just because I'm changing the oil every year as opposed to every two years.

The 1M uses a regular N series engine which only requires 5w30 LL-4 oils

Schnitzer is BMW approved and so long as BMW know youre having it done you wont have your warranty affected. Thanks for all the advice. I must admit I am a bit confused about the oil issue. For a turbocharged engine is the 10w60 or the 5w30 oil preferable?
I will be keeping the car for a long time, and it will be driven pretty hard.
My previous experience of remapping was on an Edition 30 Golf GTi and it was the Superchips Bluefin device, which was a fantastic.
If the Schnitzer remap keeps the warranty valid, then I will look into that, seems daft not to if I want more power and no warranty headaches.
Thanks for the comments. I appreciate your time

I would double check that, the BMW/Schnitzer link was broken long ago, and i haven't heard any different. As to oil, use as stated in the handbook, using anything else is giving the warranty people an excuse to tell you to fekk off if it blows, and Magnatec is a Semi Synth anyway?

My 1M is DMS remapped and it's superb! Power went from 349bhp to 402bhp and torque from 402 lb/ft to 485 lb/ft.
It's pretty brutal in gear now and has a lot of shove in any gear. I rarely use the M-button now but when I do it's comical.
TerryGT3 on here has his car done as well and it's not far off the pace of his tuned Porsche 996 GT3!

Cheers Chris, mine is now 415bhp and 475lbft and just like yours it is ballistic.
In terms of warranty - should you need it, the original map can be reloaded onto the ECU - but the chances are vey slim and it cannot be detected by just plugging in the diagnostics tool. You could possibly tell by way of test drive, but who would have experience with multiple 1Ms??
Go for it - Rob at DMS is a great guy

Does it have to go back to DMS to be reloaded, or can it be done via a Bluefin type device? In terms of warranty - should you need it, the original map can be reloaded onto the ECU - but the chances are vey slim and it cannot be detected by just plugging in the diagnostics tool. Careful now, because you may not have proper 'M' oil in it, and as its not a 'proper' M engine it may It's pretty brutal in gear now and has a lot of shove in any gear. I rarely use the M-button now but when I do it's comical.

Funnily enough, the car featured in Evo is a fellow owner friend who posts on here
I had actually started exchanging a few emails with Nick Trott (Evo editor) and Mike Duff a few weeks ago as they were interested in using my car, until they realised that they'd already agreed to use my friends car
Anyway, the remap is well worth it as the article says and I'm enjoying my car more than ever. With regards to an exhaust, I'm getting mixed messages if I'm honest.
Some tuners recommend changing the exhaust as you can get more power and torque. However when I spoke to DMS, they told me that unless I wanted it to sound a lot louder, it probably wasn't worth changing. They recently had a 1M in with Akrapovic exhaust (with valves) and although it sounded very good, the car had a little more lag. I questioned whether the standard exhaust was restrictive and was told that it was not. Bottom line, they could have made money out of me by selling me an exhaust but they didn't think it would be worth doing.
If however you do want to get an exhaust, I hear Super-Sprint do a nice system (around about £1200 for a cat-back system) and a few fellow owners have fitted that. However, I think once you've remapped it, you'll probably not be after too much more power too quickly as it's quite a quick car post map
