Mark, I totally agree that the car would need work and money put into it to turn it into a rally car or a better spec trackcar.[It has no airbox no management] , but the point I was trying to make is these cars will now break for around 25K so 30k for that car as a starting point is not that bad.[ as long as the engine is what it says it is]. I have seen road cars that have cost more than 30k with more patches than that and some with just holes. You've seen my track car so we both now what it takes to build anything half decent and the quicker you want to go the more it costs.

And what value would you put on this one?

a "barn find", cat C with light front damage, non runner needing plenty of work.

If it's being sold as a 'barn find' then it's worth hundreds of thousand..... wink

My lockup is next door to a body shop, so everything gets covered in dust fairly quickly.

If anyone wants a "barn find", it usually takes about 3 months to get a good coating of the magic barn find dust.

I sold my old 1600-02 about 4 years ago and the buyer asked if I could leave it exactly "as found" complete with the magic dust.

I delivered it for him, and unfortunately it was when we had some heavy rain storms, so it looked like it had been blasted clean!

I agree with you. As a project starting point it's no worse than many others. I just think the seller needs to be a bit more candid about the 'restoration' it had when it came over from Ireland. It would have been the perfect opportunity to have properly bare shelled and blasted it. I see it's on its 5th or 6th ebay auction now and made around £25k with final bids. Seller has been asking £32k for quick sale on FB.

I know what you mean about the cost of going quicker. cry

Just a thought gents...just because the car 'sold' in an auction doesn't necessarily mean it was sold to a new buyer....
I've seen circumstances where a car fails to meet reserve and the auctioneers effectively underwrites to buy the car on the day and simply return it to the vendor. The market thinks it sold and the auction house report it as a sale boosting the sales percentage for great PR.. I'm not suggesting this is the case here but it does happen.

quote=Bayerische]The suspense got the better of me so I called up about the car.

The car has NO service history booklet. They said that the previous owner was an engineer and he did all his own work to the car. There are receipts from BMW dealers showing parts bought for the car.

I asked what work had been done to the car over the years. I was told routine servicing, brake pipes, bushes and a gear gator.

I asked where they got the car from, they said it was purchased from the previous owner by the owner of the firm.

Absolutely no mention of a replacement engine.

I hate to say I told you so but..........I told you so. Let that be lesson to you, nothing wrong with being a cynic.

Yes, it's had some repairs, and not to the best standard.

But it is 30 years old.

It's a lot better than other 30 year old cars, and a lot worse than others.

It is MOT'd and runs, and looks presentable.

As has been said, it could be re done as a rally car, colour change and plate change then it's worth considerably more and no one would be aware that it is this car.

Do we know what this sold for a while back?

Ended it's 6th auction on £29K a few minutes ago.

Seems reasonable compared to some of the things we've seen recently. Possibly 5-8K too strong given the mileage and the front seats look wrong though.

The seats are the factory option Recaro LSs and as such a nice feature.

Back in the world of the analogue :

I know these cars are very much appreciated by enthusiasts.....but even with such praise and thus high expectations I must admit I am totally smitten.....after just 40 miles of driving, mainly in bringing her home from my indy. This first drive also involved two parties asking if it was for sale and a third party asking if it had a tracker on it, as there is a good chance its going to get nicked !

I took one on a test drive way back in 1995 and that's about my only involvement with an E30 M3 (I did own a 1989 E30 325i back in 1995), and apart from dreaming about them since I was a 10 year old when they came out.

Picking her up in April 2016 :

Dropped her off at my indy who spent a few hours on her, here and there for over a year, for some mechanical works and get MOT'd and also to a bodyshop to look after some relatively minimal, thank god, rust repairs and a new windscreen.

Now finally home today :

I have really enjoyed reading this thread every day (and there are some real E30 M3 aficionados on here, who almost know as much about an E30 M3 as I do about an E39 M5 smile.....but it has been VERY frustrating knowing I owned one but have been unable to drive it until today.

Long live the '80s !!

Good to hear you're enjoying it. It sounds a bit sinister asking about a tracker, but something I think is a must now. They are not hard cars to take and the parts value is enormous now. I can't say I know much about trackers, but was watching this company's YouTube channel the other night on thesubject and found it very interesting in what they can do. https://www.youtube.com/user/AutomatricsMtrack/vid...
Avoiding the doom and gloom side of life, what work have you had to do ?

Thank you !

I am also annoyingly quite aware its much sought after and also quite easy to 'take away'. But I feel relatively confident as its parked securely underground where I live, and when I do take it out its just going to be for fun so essentially its not going to be too far away from me at any point.....famous last words. (I had a really nice E36 M3 3.0 taken from me back in 2003. Still remember the VIN of course JC35222 smile )

Mechanical works overall have been minimal I'd say. Although I dropped her off in April 2016, I'd say works only really commenced around February of this year.

I supplied my chap with all the service items so an Inspection II could be carried out. (Oil, Oil Filter, Plugs, Fuel Filter, Air Filter etc etc)

Works have been spread out over a long time so from memory :

Valve clearances checked / adjusted (were found to be pretty good I believe in any case)

Replaced in tank fuel pump (trying to remember exactly why but we thought it was the best way forward, and also all old fuel drained from tank as car was sat since 2008 to 2016).

Rebuilt both rear brake calipers and flexi brake hoses (rear calipers were binding)

Replace Rotor Arm and Cap

Replace Drive Belts

Replace some fuel hoses

Replace some coolant hoses (including matrix return pipe that was perished)

Replace Wiper arm and base cover

Replace some crank case ventilation hoses

Replace Anti Roll Bar Drop links

Replace Battery

Replace Tachometer mechanism (binding)

Current drain traced to faulty interior light courtesy function relay.

Then after a few test drives by my mechanic he notice as it got up to temp, it would misfire really badly.....

Ended up being a hair line crack in the ceramic part of one of my newly supplied Bosch X5DTC plugs (but this took quite a while to diagnose, with all sorts of part swapping going on to find out what the heck was the issue).

Quite early on we put her through an MOT just to see, and it came back pretty good, with a few obvious items (rear calipers, one drop link gaiter split etc) but mainly needed a new windscreen, which had a crack in the lower right hand side which was most like caused by the rusting lower scuttle (left and right corner).

Got the bodywork sorted and thankfully the bulkhead and pretty much everywhere else was great in terms of no rot. Got new BMW screen fitted.

So that's pretty much where are now and that was basically getting it roadworthy.

Now its with me I'll undertake a more thorough restoration, like :

Suspension bushes/arms/ball joints.

Rear Subframe bushes / RTABs

Steering tie rods and perhaps steering rack

Gearshift linkage bushes and cup etc

Throttle cable and pedal. Pedal box springs and bushes

Air Con compressor (seems to have gone noisy all of a sudden).

Source some 16" BBS Style 5

Well this list could go on for ever to make it perfect....and will take a while too, so sort of like a rolling / ongoing restoration which I think is part of the fun as you see the car improve and feel better as you go along with the works.

Glad to see another E30 M3 that's getting some use. It looks great and the Style 5's will fill the arches nicely. I know some will hate me for saying it but I have always felt they were a little under wheeled as stock.

Tracker is definitely a good idea. I have a contract one and a Heath Robinson edition made using an old mobile phone. It's not as rubbish as that sounds and having tested it myself, it works pretty well.

My concern has always been the parts value of our cars, were one stolen. Does anyone know if SMART water would work? I know it might not stop someone from stealing it but it might make marked parts less desirable?

Thanks Mark !!

Its quite fun trying to source bits and pieces for it....
