M3/M4 Test Drive
Discussion
Went to look at the M3/M4, really I'd thought I'd decided on something else and was just going to finally rule it out. Hoping to change soon from B7 RS4, considering rs6, rs5, m4 and v8 vantage's.
Both cars in the showroom in black with black wheels, M4 looks stunning in the flesh in this colour imo, really blown away by the looks. I'd seen some on the road before in white and red and they didn't do anything for me.
Had a test drive in the M3. Impressions, seats are really comfy and the leather is high quality. Biggest downside of the car for me is the interior, the interior quality is just not a patch on the equivalent Audi's imo, some of the plastics and buttons are really sub par. The section of plastic below where the seats belts comes out isn't even fixed on solid and you can push it in, the kind of plastic you find in a ford fiesta. I'd go as far as to say the quality, fit and finish on my 2007 RS4 is better quality than modern BMW's. Definitely heard some rattles when driving
The bonnet bulge is huge when you're driving the car, huge. Demo car had HUD which i thought was awesome but the 3 grand repair bill if you crack the windscreen would put me off. Loved the steering wheel and the steel feel was perfect. Speed of the car I thought was incredible, rip your face off fast, wow. One of the things I was most interested in was the noise and I thought it was alright, it seems a really loud raw and wild car and whilst it's no V8 I thought it was a decent noise. Ride quality wasn't too good, in sport plus mode at least, can't remember how much better the other modes were. Had a great test drive though, the car is loads of fun and I went in with ruling it out at the back of my mind but came away seriously considering it.

[quote=Schermerhorn]Covered by Autoglass surely?
Mine cracked on the M6 and after £70 excess it was taken care of.
Autoglass can presumably source HUD screens OEM from BMW or are they available direct from Pilkington?
I mention this since I understood the manufacture had not been copied yet by third party suppliers

he M6 GC CP was £2000 IF you had no screen insurance , £3000 no way for an M3.
That's strange as mine was replaced by Autoglass & the bill that went to my Insurer was over £900 but less than a grand & that was a BMW OEM screen. Can't see how an M6 one could be twice the price as if i'm mistaken it's a smaller screen & same applies to the M3/4.

RichardP on Here, just had one done in the UK, price Just over £2K, check him out. Can't see how an M6 one could be twice the price as if i'm mistaken it's a smaller screen & same applies to the M3/4.
It was to be fitted by Autoglass till he was told that the cameras needed re-calibrating and autoglass could NOT do these set-ups, but the price was high even with them.
My screen was replaced by BMW Listers as Autoglass could not comply with the tests and setting up the screen cameras after, I did not get a price as it was part of a third party claim.

Regarding HUD and windscreen, previous E60 M5 I had my screen replaced at my cost, £400 compared to a non HUD windscreen which was £250 IIRC. Nothing to re-calibrate then apart from disconnect and re-connect the sensor in the rear view mirror myself.
Keep looking at the M4/M5 still, my wedding is eating all my money up for now

Heard on M3 on start up yesterday as a bloke got in it as I walked past....I'll be honest I thought it sounded really poor given the heritage of what the high revving naturally aspirated engines have sounded like even at low revs. Heard another one today pulling away from traffic lights. Jeez not impressed.
Given how the new C Class AMG sounds so much better (there's an interesting piece in Harris's video about all the trouble Merc went to to achieve this) I do wonder if BMW will work on it.

Try an Alpina B4 it addresses some of the issues you describe take a look at this:Both cars in the showroom in black with black wheels, M4 looks stunning in the flesh in this colour imo, really blown away by the looks. Of course you can't ignore the elephant in the room which is the new C63 either:

I contacted my mercedes dealers to see if they had one in the showroom before i went to look.
"We don't and we're sold out until June, please let me know if you want a build slot" So gonna pass on the C63, besides I think it's expensive, not sold on the looks and probably couldn't live with the interior screen on the dash.
