I did. You'll notice the drivetrain isn't the only factor in the E63 win hehe

Rarely see E63's on track (I haven't seen one) but seen a number of M5's, not including all the ring taxis (all M5's)
M5 unquestionably better on track. E63 is fast and fun, but can't quite keep up.

There is, I can't be bothered looking though.
In brief, my experience was the AMG was lighter and defter of touch at speeds up to 80/90 mph, above that it got a bit 'fidgety'. The M5 was more composed at higher speeds. It had a better gearbox, but this was negated by the better ride around town and sound of the AMG.

It's all very well being a BMW fan, and I've owned three, but it's a shame if that loyalty blinds you to the ability of the competition. Lots of fantastic cars out there!

BTW the AWD E63 is actually available in the UK right now, and is supposedly much better than the current M5.
I've never owned an AMG & have never had any desire to look at them, however that's an image/styling thing so doesn't detract from how good they may be, i just don't like them & i'm certainly not wedded to the BMW M brand. That said, the new E63S has grabbed my interest a little, however it appears yet again that BMW 'may' have top trumped them, but i guess we'll have to wait a couple of months to get a better picture.

Noting your last point, what you mean is the 'brand' new E63 is available with AWD in the UK & it should be better than the 'old' M5 (production stopped a couple of months ago). The new M5 is all over the press this week & it doesn't appear that BMW will be overly concerned about their competition when it arrives on the streets in a few months as it appears to be an epic machine. I'll look closely at both when the chance arises & i'm impressed with the decent reviews the new E63S is getting.

Evidently you didn't as the article concludes using the word 'Confidence' in reference to its AWD being key. :-D
Regardless, that car wasn't available in the UK at the time so that further proves the point.
The E63 S that was available here, is slower than the M5 and not as driver focused or refined on the road.
I don't mind AMG's (I like them but gearbox/styling aren't to my taste). You probably own an AMG or have done and are obviously a big fan of them and if you prefer them then that's fine and dandy but to me the M5 is the better car and that's why I chose it over its competitors. smile

In the latest Whatcar review it describes the F10 M5 as "slightly underwhelming" and the new M5 as "more mature" than rivals such as the E63 AMG which, it states in justification, is "no bad thing". So less fun than the new MB then. biggrin

I may well go M5 if I can get spec required, then in 2 years see how new model AWD E63 prices are firming up.
Or may go for something quite different.

Yep, agree it's still alot of car for the money (CP is £6,700) plus HK & SPG. No doubt if it was a fully loaded CP it would be up for awhole lot more.

Yes it does. All of them do. It was standard.

You are thinking of full leather, which includes the dashboard. Very rare option when I was looking.

Yeah and at 5k it explains why it's a rare option. Nice to have but plenty of leather as standard imo

But 5k ?
It's always going to share components with its lower performance models as they are really just that.

The M5 has soft merino leather. Unless your car has an 'individual' colour scheme the 535d will be the harder dakota leather.

It does. Rather confusingly "extended leather" means the "part leather" no cost option. I think it just means "extended" from no leather?!? Maybe marketeers couldn't bare to use the phrase "part leather"?

"full leather" is the £5K option.

Yes, all M5 leathers are soft merino. All non M5s are Dakota cardboard leather. (unless ind. optioned)

Edit, sorry bit late with this...

Now I've driven mine a bit more I'm starting to notice quite a few rattles from the interior when driving on certain road surfaces at certain (legal!) speeds.

The most annoying one sounds like it's coming from the B pillar right behind my ear. It sounds like the sort of high frequency rattle you get from a very bassy speaker. There also seems to be a similar one in the passenger side B pillar, as well as a lower frequency rattle from the cupholder area.

Anyone else had these? My car's on 38k now.

PS for the MPG geeks, last tank was 16MPG, average over 1000 miles is 19.6. hehe

I had a similar rattle on my M5 but to be honest couldn't be bothered to do anything about it and lived with it - it was only on certain road surfaces so not all the time.

Over 33000 miles I average 18.6mpg so in line with your figures albeit the best I managed was 7mpg on an enthusiastic run one day smile

Yes I had the b pillar and got it sorted under warranty.

Parts that were changed:
51437325367 air duct
64227211888 & 887 air duct grilles

Hope this helps as it drove me nuts!

Thanks guys. I do want to get it fixed as it's immensely annoying. I did wonder if it was the air vents...
