I’ve put 132k miles on my F10 and have just done 1000 miles in the last week in an F90 whilst it’s in for a repair. I’m actually looking forward to getting my car back - it’s way more comfortable, as good as the xdrive is. I do think the F10 will go down as the “new” E39.

What was the repair on the f10 out of interest?

Some fairly minor body work. Another driver pulled straight into my path as I was overtaking her. 60mph sideswipe and the F10 didn’t flinch - it stood up extremely well to the impact. The F90 is a claims management special I’m afraid, but I had a Euro trip to make with my pregnant wife last week so a stbox wouldn’t do. Car is in the hands of a main dealer. Dread to think what its cost in total.

I don't know what you have been driving, but I have driven M cars for 20 years including E39, E60, F10 and now an F90 M5. I have to say that the F90 is the best car I have ever driven, never mind the best M5. And particularly having come from the F10 straight to the F90 I honestly think it is light years ahead of it. The Xdrive transforms it and the transmission is superb. To be honest, I think the F10 is the worst M5 I have driven, I found it bland and almost impossible to fully open the throttle due to lack of traction. The E60 had that glorious V10, the pinnacle of n/a engines in my opinion and the E39 had that great V8.

I do worry about some of the posts I read on here.

Couldn’t agree more. I understand people having different opinions but I’m struggling with the previous...... I am incredibly lucky to have had some very very nice cars over the years and the F90 Comp is far and away the best daily I’ve ever had. Pound for pound the best “all round car in the world”.... light years ahead of my old F10.

I'm just conveying my own direct impression of the F90. I collected it, having never driven one, fully expecting to form exactly the same opinion as you have, but to my surprise am finding that there are some things I prefer about the older model. Do you think putting 2k miles on a loaned F90 after 132k miles in my own F10 is insufficient experience on which to form an opinion of either car?

It is absolutely brilliant, I don't dispute that for a moment. The traction advantage makes it absolutely formidable. However I am doing another 1000 miles in France and Belgium next week and I do genuinely hope I have my own car back for the trip if only for the simple facts that I find it considerably comfier and appreciate the bigger fuel tank.

Before the loan I would probably have ordered one without test driving. Now I've spent some time in one, I'm in no rush to change.

I’ll update when I get back into the F10 as that will either validate or dispel my thoughts.

Fair enough, and I didn't mean to sound so critical on re-reading my comments. But as Gary says above, pound for pound has to be the "best all round car in the world" and it's hard to argue with that after after 2 months and 3k from new.

I have read one or two comments about a slightly firmer ride in the competition version which is what I have, but I think you have to be particularly sensitive for that to be an issue. However the non comp version may be more to your taste if that is what you felt as the suspension is apparently a little more compliant.

I’ve been back in my F10 for a few days.

My impressions are generally confirmed. I prefer the older car. There is a lot to like about the F90 but for me personally, I’d be after something with more barge like qualities, which I think the F10 does better.

Perhaps the standard car would have been better suited to me than the comp, although I’d still struggle with the seating. I’d also be the one person who ditches the CF roof for the sunroof option which I think suits the car better.

If I wanted to replace my F10 with another super saloon now I would probably take a look at Alpina And the 7 rather than jumping straight in with an F90 order.

Would you not go for the RS7?

If I were going to go in that direction I would be leaning towards the S8 I suspect...

Anyway it’s all academic as I don’t intend to replace the M5 for a little while, and if I did it would need to be something larger to accommodate a growing family.

S8 is 4 seats only isn’t it? RS7 is 5 seats?

Why struggling?

Being 'better' at measurable things does not necessarily a greater car make.

The other poster may simply prefer the seats cost difference playing at the back of his mind the looks - frankly who cares if someone likes something bulky for them.

I think the Fiat Coupe is an amazingly good looking car always have always will but I know plenty don’t at all.
People drag on about MPVs - well we have one now S Max we’re happy with it and couldn’t care too hoots if someone or many others hate it it’s all about choice.
I enjoyed the F10 535d but have not tried the newer 5 series so cannot compare - however I’d happily have another F10 likely an LCI over pre LCI

Well it's the 4th generation M5 that I've owned and it's the best by quite a long way. You can make your own mind up about what makes a "great car", but by my standards it's right up there at the pinnacle of automotive engineering. And I don't think that there will be many more like it given the way the car industry and car ownership is heading.

It's biggest fault? The heated front seat button is a touch screen button and is a real pain to use on the move! rolleyes

I wasn’t bringing cost difference into it at all... I didn’t pay anything to drive an F90 Comp for 2k miles and faced with the choice between putting more “free” miles on it for my euro business trip this coming week, or getting my own car back, I preferred the latter.

I find it strange that my opinion is interpreted so controversially. I’m about as big an advocate for M5’s generally as you’ll find, really wanted to love the F90 but just didn’t gel with it the way I expected to, largely on ergonomic grounds. Dynamically it’s far better than the F10 and I haven’t disputed that. I just feel the F10 offered a very good combination of soft/refined vs hard edged characteristics - a jekyl and Hyde car as many say - whereas the F90 is far more focussed but doesn’t do quite the soft stuff so well.

As I practically live in my M5, the comfort stuff is perhaps more important to me than others.

I'm not saying it isn't a great car, I have no experience of it.

My point is simply that newer, faster, grippier etc. doesn't automatically make a car better like some people might assume.

Look at the reviews when the MP4-12C came out. Objectively 'better' than the Ferrari 458 yet I can only ever recall journalists saying they'd rather have the Italian.

Engine sounds like a harmonica
Too powerful for 2wd (can't use all 550hp making it a waste of time)
Corrosion under front wing mirrors.
Not great transmission and had problems with pulling away smoothly when the car would decide to use 2nd.

Wouldn't recommend.

I had zero corrosion on my 2010 model what so ever.

What year was yours, were you the first owner ie can you verify no damage there which might have caused it. Did you get it all rectified within the 10 year OEM rust warranty?

Yes PH with lots of owners running M5/M6 and other similarly powerful RWD cars tuned with >700bhp and not complaining about them...

I had mine at 750bhp for 75k miles and had no problem using full power - it just involved a little bit of discretion and acceptance of the fact that there’s no point engaging with Golf R drivers on greasy wet roundabouts.
