Boring topic I know...but thought I had to share after reading a buying guide in EVO re the V10 M6. They said expect 15mpg normally with 20 on a run.
I've recently been to N Wales for the weekend and took the (E39) M5; 4 up with luggage for the weekend. 80 leptons cruise on the motorway and some relatively spirited driving round some Welsh A roads gave me 30.6mpg. I was chuffed with this figure as mooching round Manchester usually gives me 15mpg, similar to the M6.
The car is standard except for a muffler delete, is the M6 really 10 mpg worse on a run than the M5? I know it's more powerful and has 2 more cylinders but it still surprised me as BMW engines are usually pretty efficient.
Anyone got real life evidence to agree/disagree with EVO on this and what's the best you've had out of your M5?

That's pretty good.
Recent trip to Italy via Germany in my E39 M5:-
Fast Autobahn work, fully loaded with people & holiday goods and chattels, including periods of 120mph+ cruising where possible = 19mpg. (Thought that was pretty amazing in the circs). Mainly fuelled by German 103 octane petrol.
General driving in Italy with/without passengers = 26.7mpg. (Resorted to 95 octane on occasions.)
75/80mph cruising on Autostrada and Autobahns on the return leg, again fully loaded = 29.7mpg. (98 and 103 octane fuels). Stunned by how little it drank on the way home.

Yes, they are, but that's the downsides of having one of the best ever engines ever made at your disposal.
V10 engined BMWs are very special, expensive to run and maintain relative to other M cars but still cheaper than supercar alternatives.
Thought the EVO article put a positive spin on the M6, wich bodes well for prices. Get one sub 60k miles and warranty it.

Not an M5 but my M6 average mpg on the onboard computer ays 17.9mpg over the last year. I do 90% motorway miles, don't hang around but also don't go crazy. I thought EVO's 15mpg guide was pretty accurate for an average user, ie fewer motorway miles than me.
I don't mind the mpg so much, the ridiculously small tank drives me nuts though - fill up 3/4 times a week!
