I think it's certainly the most desirable M Car we've seen in a while
I agree 100%. It is definitely desirable. But it is also "just" a variant of an M2.
I mean that in the same way a GT2RS or GT3 are "just" variants of a 911. So it's not to demean the car in any way.
Agree with the market sentiment. I suspect BMW will have to do something. A number of folk are pulling out and I too will give notice pretty soon. The finance market has crashed where some lenders have essentially shut shop, and those still offering leases have jacked up prices. People are being asked to also take unpaid leave or pay cuts. Short of Bmw giving a healthy discount and 0 perc finance this will be one hard pill to swallow.

Depends on your dealer relationship, personal reason and amount of deposit placed. Eg if it’s £1k it’s not a big issue either way, if you have no job or have financial issues now then I am sure they will give your money back, and if you are a repeat buyer then probably also ok.
It's from a dealer I bought a handful of cars from in the 90's and early 00's. It's a 1k deposit. I'm retired and whilst I don't have any financial issues as such, it's a completely different world now to a couple of months ago when we confirmed our order. In so much as investments which were earmarked to finance the car are not where they were at that time. We've certainly got some thinking to do over the next week or so.
If we were to cancel it would NOT be because we did not want the car, far from it in fact. It's just the seismic shift this virus has caused to the financial world as a whole.
If the dealer chose not to return the deposit it may still be a case of cutting our losses?
I would very much doubt BMW would assist with any incentives such as discounting or 0% finance at this stage, as others have suggested on another forum.

Would I also be correct that a cancellation at this stage would result in a loss of deposit?
No. Dealers are obliged to refund deposits placed on new cars (and used cars too provided no preparation expenses have been incurred) unless the build process has commenced to a customer's personal specification - then it becomes a negotiation over whether the dealer can sell elsewhere and incur no losses (they will of course then tell you they've spent £x marketing "your" car to sell elsewhere, which would be difficult to disprove). If your dealer tries to keep your deposit, they are acting illegally and will soon fold when you rightfully threaten legal action (small claims court will suffice). My deposit was placed in May 2016 and I pulled the plug a few weeks ago and I have quite rightly received a full refund of my deposit without quibble. Of course, BMW have enjoyed nearly four years of interest on the deposit I placed.£80k buys you a lot of limited run ///M car right now. Take a look at the current M4 GTS & DTM prices.

Ignoring the fact these are possibly the worst pictures of an £80k car in any advert right now.
Sure they were slated when new but with some set-up time on the 3-way KW suspension I'm sure the handling issues could be resolved. They are certainly more focused than the M2 CS....

I'm unsure as to why people think M2CS values won't go the same way as M3/4CSs have, even pre-Covid.
The 3/4 didn't fly off the shelf, so to speak, and the dealer I bought my M4CP from offered me a huge discount to take a 4CS almost as soon as they started being delivered. Then there was talk of the 3CS being more limited but still they didn't stay firm.

I was offered a new M4CS immediately when they launched but didn’t even get past first base with the M2CS after years of hounding.
Pre Covid of course.

Thanks. At what stage was this? Had you spec'd and ordered the car at that point?
Yes, ordered and contract signed with all spec confirmed apart from the colour (Misano looks great in the press shots but I found it pretty bland in the metal when I went to see the Z4 they had in Misano). When I sat down with my guy at BMW to spec the car he said ceramics are a must and then when I said I'm pulling out because the car isn't really special enough and that £82k is crazy for a 2 Series he replied "Well, why would you want ceramics? There's no point in having them and it'll take six grand off the price".He was pretty dejected but didn't seem surprised - he asked me to confirm in writing my reasons for cancelling so that he could pass back to BMW and the way he asked me was as if he knew it was coming and that cancellations were commonplace.
Given that price-wise it's in the same ball park as the Porsche GT4 (if you can get one at list), I would've expected it to be a two seater, much lighter and possibly with a half cage etc.
