Hi all,

I'm posting this on behalf a good friend of mine who's engine is little poorly.
I was in the car when this happened.

Under load in 5th gear the engine lost power we pulled over and we could hear a knocking noise.
The cars has around 150K and gets an oil change ahead of scheduled with the correct 10-60 spec (before any one asks)

He is based in Preston, but is more than happy to get the car transport outside of the north west to a garage.

Worst case scenario he may require a bottom end rebuild - Any recommendations? Ideally those who have had work carried out.

Thank you

Hello there

My suggesting is get it to BMW or a good independent asap and have it checked out before sending it anywhere. The BMW dealers in Blackpool were excellent with my car when i had to check in with them a while ago.

The cost of a diagnostic check will be less than a transporter...

When you say under load, was he absolutely giving it the beans in 5th ? hopefully he pulled it over straight away.

Is he sympathetic to the warm up / warm down recommended for the engine before / after a spirited drive ? Just like me, the older i get the longer the warm up / warm down seems to take...

Good luck / what a shame.

I'd try Munich Legends but wherever you go don't expect a cheap fix. Labour rates may vary by a few percentage points but the cost off parts is eye watering. If the bottom end has gone the crank is rarely salvageable and a new one is £2150 before any discount. At 150K you'd probably be better junking the engine and fitting a secondhand unit. Quarry Motors should have them in stock, expect to pay circa £2.5k

I used to take my M3 to Darren Woods in Stockport when I lived in Penwortham. That'd be my first port of call.

Op possibly time to sell the car on / part x with clear understanding it is sold with an engine issue.

This way someone who is habdy with the spammers can take on the project and you can buy the next car.

Nearly 30,000 posts, do you just write pointless stuff for fun?

Sounds like an engine on its last legs
Option fix it yourself
Option 2 offload it before it detonated
Option 3 run it until it breaks
