E92 M3 Tyres - Tyres with different manufacturer marking?
Discussion
Hi - I need to buy 4 new tyres and will be going for Michelin Pilot Super Sport as has been recommended by many on here and elsewhere.
However, does it really matter if you pick the BMW specific version (M01) or just pick the best value no matter what preferred manufacturer??
Found a decent deal with Costco getting BMW versions on the front (245/35/19) for £190 each, but rears (265/35/19) are £255 each for BMW ones and £235 each for Porsche ones..... So 'only' £40 difference for the pair, but does it really make a difference in the real world?
Thoughts???

Different manufacturers ask for different compounds and stiffness, even on the same brands of tyre. It depends how much you care or are likely to notice! If you're a vehicle dynamics engineer, I'd recommend you get the BMW ones. If you probably won't feel the difference, get the cheapest.
In simplest terms of course, in a Porsche, the rear tyres have the engine over them, whereas the front tyres do in your M3 (there are many other reasons compounds can vary between manufacturers though)
What are the different load ratings? The cheaper ones might wear out quicker of course, in which case it's just false economy.

The answer is maybe. Porsche in particular can demand quite a lot of changes to their tyres for the improper weight balance of the 911.
I'd be surprised if an N rated super sport is cheaper than an aftermarket (no rating) PSS.
For what it's worth, the PSS has been replaced by the PS4S https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F65rXOlS2f8 (warning, long and boring)

Ah yes, this. I'm going for PS4S or Cup 2 when I next need new ones.Chapppers said:

I have N rated tyres on my VW and I haven't fallen off the road yet.
I'd say you'd be perfectly okay OP.
Yes in all likelihood unless you're Walter Rohrl himself you'll likely not notice much of a difference in steering feel or grip and a higher load rating will probably last a bit longer...I'd say you'd be perfectly okay OP.
Thanks for the rapid responses!
Just checked and the prices for the rears (each) are actually :
Porsche - £231.10
Merc - £251.14
BMW - £263.02
I really can't imagine me noticing the difference so I suspect I will go for the Porsche ones. Unless I started to do track days or had the opportunity to do back to back testing against them both, I wouldn't be any the wiser.....
As an FYI - No details of the PS4's but the other ones offered were Pilot Sport Cup 2's for £287.02 for regular, and £296.62 for Merc version.
Current offer for Costco is £75 voucher to spend in store for 4 Michelin tyres so just think how many massive pizza slices I will be able to get with that!

MO tyres are for Mercedes.
BMW are normally 'starred'.
Porsche N tyres seem to last about half as long as non-Porsche marked tyres.
It's all marketing crap anyway, so I wouldn't worry - and I swapped my starred Conti M3s for Michelins as soon as I could, and never had an issue with warranty or insurance clams in 100,000 miles.

That's interesting. I thought that a Porsche N Michelin PS2 was the same as a non N Michelin PS2.BMW are normally 'starred'.

A BMW did once tell me that I'd have to consult my insurance company about running non runflat tyres on a car that came with them.
Interestingly, Porsche dealers whenever I have seen them have never been fussed about N rated tyres or not when I have spoken to a few technicians.
Just to close off the thread, I ended up getting BMW spec for both front and rear as Costco would not (due to safety, policy, etc......) fit the non-BMW tyres to the car (i.e. Porsche / Merc ones). Had a check around, and couldn't find a better price so got them fitted on Saturday.
Other slight PITA was that you can't book a slot at Costco on Sat/Sun, only during the week so you just need to show up and wait until they can fit you in - spent just over 2 hrs contemplating bulk buys of cereal and shaving gel.......
On the bright side, they fitted them carefully and well - the car is much better balanced now.
Thanks for your input.
