Has anyone driven one? I am asking on the M forum as I have owned an F10 M5 and am interested to see here the perspective of an individual with experience of an M car, in particular the M5. I'll be considering the new M5 and E63s next year, but the rave reviews and description of the Alfa drivivng more like a sports car than sports saloon are interesting!

I have but can't help with comparison to any modern bmw unfortunately. I can tell you that the QF is every bit as good as the reviewsmake out, it's a stunning car particularly in dynamic or race modes. Get a test drive sorted I say

I drove the Alfa QF back to back against my 2017 M4 CP.
I thought the Alfa was the better driving experience.
Don't know what the overall ownership experience would be like though.

The direct rivals would be C63 and M3, rather than M5 and E63, at least size-wise.

I was quite keen on a QF except I need slightly more space, and therefore opted for an F10 M5. No driving experience whatsoever, but could see myself in one in the future - the reviews are glowing and makes for a more interesting choice than the usual suspects.

i joined the Alfa forum to watch with interest the initial reports from owners. there are a few "teething troubles" so far, but nothing major, however its fair to say the dealers appear to be quite useless generally sorting issues, referring stuff back to italy etc, and there is a general lack of Alfa dealers anyway, with a subsequent lack of QF trained technicians.
Residual values also are my worry, so i'm watching from afar for now.

Alfa is more fun, sounds better. Overall package isn't as good as the M5 though, IMO.

I'd still like an Alfa when they've lost a bit of value. Couldn't justify £60k on one vs 40 on a used M5.

Yeah I know it is more the M3 competitor than M5, and I may find out the Alfa doesn't have the space i am looking for. I am actually in a Lotus V6 at the moment, and the positive comments about the Alfa in terms of handling and steering peaked my interest. We are also yet to see how the new M5 (and M5 Competition pack apparently to be launched in 2018) compares.

Yes, that's a good point and I made it sound like a direct comparison between the M5 and the QF in my post. Obviously it's not. I drove the QF back to back with my old M3.

That said, I recently took my M5 over the alps and was surprised at how much fun it was for such a big and heavy car. Just try not to think about the brakes and tyres...

Another point I should have expanded on was my comment about the BMW being better overall. The quality of the interior and the navigation/radio/etc interface is so much higher, as you'd expect, in the BMW. I know you don't buy an Alfa for those reasons but it's a consideration if you're spending a lot of time in the car.

I owned a Giulia Quad from April to July this year.

Difficult stuff first - it was a fairky early production car and exhibited a number of electrics/software faults. These included all the issues that were reported with the PH car and I spoke with Dan T about our shares experiences. There were several software updates but these didn't fix all the issues and the final straw came when the car left me stranded in Zurich on the way to what was supposed to be a very enjoyable road trip around Italy. Subsequently other press cars have exhibited the same fault and it seems like there is a batch issue with wastewater solenoids or similar. Customer services were less than helpful and would only agree to having the car reset and faults cleared / updates applied rather than investigating the root cause.

For balance I should add that there are plenty of cars that haven't experienced these issues and later cars in particular seem to have these issues rectified at source.

I'll admit I lost faith and patience at that stage.

I had a range of offers on the car from Alfa dealers - ranging from 50k (most common) to £38k !

A BMW dealer gave me £52k and resold the car immediately.

Make of that what you will ref residuals - car cost me £59k

As for the car itself.... it's a brilliant drive. Excellent chassis, lovely engine, and incredible steeering. The steering is the standout for me, way way better than on the M3/4 and not far off that of my McLaren it's that good.

The money spent has gone on the stuff you don't really see but feel - chassis, steering, cF propshaft and roof (not visible cf but painted), clever rear diff etc.

The interior is ok but not brilliant. Functional with some nice touches but a few brittle plastics etc. Driving position is excellent. Nav and info serviceable but nothing special.

Overall the driving experience is massively enjoyable. It's a much better steer than the M4 cab CP I replaced it with. Admittedly the extra weight of the cab, softer springs etc make a difference here but personally I found it more fun, involving and enjoyable than the tintop and the M3 which is why I went for the different experience of the cab.

There is a lot of talk about the Quad being a 4 door Ferrari. It really does feel a bit like that. Go and drive one, I am pretty certain you will enjoy it.

Thanks for the reply. I had a look at one yesterday and it was lovely; I've not test driven one yet, but i plan to. Hopefully the problems seen are just early teething problems given that was an all new car. It sounds like it could be the best car for me; as close to the excitement of the Lotus whilst being able to fit our twin boys in ( i checked and i can get a rear facing child seat behind my in a comfortable driving position which was a surprise).
