i have had an unusual amount of time to carry out a lot of research (due to having Covid at New Year) and the only alternative that ticks all the boxes is a 3-4 year old 911. Still working out the man maths for HQ tho but the TVR will go too.

Cheers

So looking at M6 at the moment. How much more space is there in the rear with a GC compared to the Coupe? Its not just the lack of 2 doors, is it?

Somewhere (cant remember) where I had seen that the Coupe has less rear seat space, is this correct?

Yes - the 6 coupe, like the E31 8 and E24 6 before is a 2+2, although even then, that's overstating the rear legroom; to make enough passenger 'lucky' enough to sit there, the front seats have to be pushed forward, making the driving position very uncomfortable. The GC is a genuine 4 seater but check the headroom is enough for anyone who's going to sit in there.

Thanks. I noted later that the GC is 2.5 inches longer and as most guys know, all inches are valuable. The longer doors of the Coupe, whilst looking pretty are probably a nightmare when parked. I like the look of the GC, ever since I saw my first one. I found a 'perfect' spec car yesterday but Coupe, so think ill pass.

Both my sons are older now (one has left home already), both fairly tall but would compromise if needed. My wife's daily is a Mini Countryman, we fit into that fine and I have an old Range Rover if needed.

The GC is a lot bigger in the back than the coupe.
As a frame of reference, there's more room in the back than a 3-series saloon, and is probably similar to a 5 series.

I bought mine with long distance family holidays in mind and it's superb for that.

Best thing to do is to find a used one near you in the dealer network and ask if you could come along and have a look and experience it yourself.

I'm duplicating in another thread but this probably belongs in this M6 thread ...

"So, not sure if I need to start a new thread, ive kinda hijacked this one ...

I drove this today, briefly.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/224398664920?hash=item3...

A few points to note, it's a competition spec car and as I discovered later, its been remapped and decatted.

A few observations (in no priority order).

The GC has enough space in the rear. Im around 5 10 and could sit low down in front and have enough space for myself in the rear.

The car is much lower than I expected, very sleek, very nice seating position.

The comfort seats are good, not F10 good but certainly good enough. I dont know how they compare to the Sports seats.

The colour is something to behold, so too the interior colours and the full leather up the dash and along the roof.

It has the newer i drive update, so has Apple (spit) carplay etc. Whilst its nice, I didnt even bother once I started to drive the car.

The car is an event. Holy crap. Its large and low, I didnt know the roads and took it easy. It was suggested I push on a bit on one section and its mindblowing. The pipes are louder but not intrusive. I'd actually consider this 'OK'. The car, at 60/70 mph is effortless and refined. The ride is firm, but not horrible.

The drive reminded me of the Alfa Romeo QF however it was louder and whilst not as precise, was good. The only other car that has put a smile on my face like this was a mapped XFR with a Spires exhaust which at £10K was a bargain, albeit a much older and certainly not as good car.

This is certainly at the upper end of my budget. We were looking at £45K into an X3 M40i.

Is it too much car / power. Yes. Do I care, no. It's spectacular but I would imagine it being very different unless it was perfectly dry and with warm tyres.

Oh .... what to do?

WF66UVC, does anyone know this car by any chance? Sense tells me to avoid a mapped car. My heart loved it however. I'd keep the sound, not sure that the extra ponies are needed as such ...."

Found this. Odd. I noticed it had Car Giant plates on and a bit of google found this.

https://www.cargiant.co.uk/car/bmw/m6/WF66UVC?fbcl...

It was sold for £35K last year. Someone got a bargain (or a problem)?

Try not to be seduced by the cars (many) wares, but I'd be a bit wary of that particular one....
The seat base looks very baggy for only 19448 miles, and I don't think these cars really need any engine mods above the Competition level, and so isn't worth the possible risk (especially with the vague warranties you tend to get from a non-franchised used car sales place).
I'd wager that that car has had a pretty hard life.

Thanks. I think the miles looked correct. Wear and tear on the 6 series seats seems to be a common issue. Ive seen bolsters falling apart on cars that should have looked a lot better.

I tend to agree, the colour is spectacular but its a risky buy. I'm not in a rush.

Suppose another question, is there anything else in the M stable that is similar? People complain about M4 in terms of refinement, motorway noise etc. Might be a very long shot but I presume an M2 Comp is very far away from this?

Spending the best part of £40k on a used car, I’d certainly want it approved used with some BMW come back, especially as it is already 4 years old and past the new warranty.

I just don’t know why anyone would map an M car which is already at peak in terms of model range performance. I wonder if you could determine when the decat / map were done - ok other groups and FB forums, people tend to do once the 3 year manufacturer warranty is up and / or once finance has been cleared, enabling them to deviate from stock.

Ok such a lovely car with mega refinement etc I wonder why a previous owner would have done this.

I'd agree - spectacular, but relatively common on the M6 GC - there's at least 3 identical ones around here

I asked the dealer, nice guy, said that they had written to the previous owner to ask but suggested 50/50 whether or not there would be a reply.

I think irrespective, I'm going to pass on it.

This on the Car Giant ad

"Previous registered keeper information indicates this vehicle may have had multiple users as a business, fleet or lease. For specific information on this car please speak to a member of our team."

would set me running in the opposite direction. The non competition has more power then you use so I don't get why people go to that expense but the sports pipes yes I'd love more noise.

I saw an orange M6 conv yesterday that gave way to me in a narrow road in Hazlemere - I'd love to know what pipes he had it sounded fabulous as he pulled away cloud9

I saw that too but assumed it was a generic comment, not specifically related to that car. I'd be surprised (but not impossible) if that was a 'pool car'.

But yes, I've walked away from it. Prices on nice M6s are still highish. I prefer it over the M5 but I think M5 is possibly back on the list as its similar enough.

I agree, I'd like more character / sound, arguably dont need the extra power.

I wasn't necessarily suggesting it'd be clocked or anything, more that it suggests it's had a (very) hard life. Mine has the exact same interior but almost double the miles, and still looks pretty much like new.

I was only considering San Marino blue for mine - it is stunning.
Although the M6GC is quite a rare car (less than 600 UK cars in total), it's worth waiting for the right one to come along, ideally with warranty if possible.
Mine is factory standard but has the Competition pack, and it sounds great. Before I bought it I was considering an exhaust upgrade but I don't think it really needs it, particularly as I'll be using my car for big road trips so keeping maximum refinement is important for me.

I love the looks/performance etc of the M2 but it is a totally different proposition. I guess it comes down to your own situation which car suits your needs best (e.g. how often do you carry passengers? what kind of driving do you expect to do? Where is your own personal sweet-spot on handling/refinement/comfort etc).

I think that the M6GC and M5 (despite sharing a lot of mechanicals) are actually very different cars; I've always liked the M5 for what it is, but I have never yearned to own one - I wanted an M6GC from the day the came out. cloud9
It's one of these situations that maybe makes no sense on paper. An M5 is a very good Q-car and very understated, but (in my opinion) not very special at all.
Really depends on what you're after. thumbup

First impressions:
What an absolutely epic machine! Easily the best car I’ve owned, and seems to take the best bits from each of the cars in my history and rolled them into one. smile

As I’d hoped, it has the duality of managing to play the big, effortless, comfy cruiser but also the fairly sharp supercar.

The colour is absolutely beautiful – I’d been dreaming of a car this colour long before San Marino blue was even a thing; There have been shades close to it in the past - Range Rover Sport SVR came in a similar colour, and BMW Le Mans blue was again similar, but never what I’d pictured in my mind – this is it! So I knew I had to get one in this colour.

A great thread with so many lovely photos on it. cool

Like you I absolutely love San Merino Blue(I recently got a F82 M4 in SMB), and it was when I first saw it on a M6 that I absolutely fell in love with the colour. cloud9

I've also had a E53 X5 4.8iS and a E90 330i in Le Mans Blue...so SMB is probably quite a predictable colour for me to go for to be fair!

Your M6 looks absolutely wonderful. thumbup

Enjoy it. driving

Thanks buddy smile

Congrats on the M4 - that's very strange - it was this thread about an M4 that I first fell in love with San Marino Blue, and then when I first test drove an M6GC at a dealer back in 2019 it was parked next to an M4 in SMB and it was absolutely stunning, and it was at that moment I decided I had to have my M6GC in that colour. Here's the photo I took of the M4...

What's also strange is that I too had a 3 Series (E92) in Le Mans Blue - we seem to have very similar tastes in car specs hehe
Le Mans blue was a really nice colour, but San Marino is just on another level entirely - I've had as many positive comments about the colour of the M6GC as I've had about the car itself!
