I ended up bailing on the idea of an M6 for now. I did look at M4 Comps as well as a replacement for my 840i GC which will be going soon - but in the end I decided I didn't want to borrow to be able to buy and I didn't want to obliterate savings so I've picked up a very tidy G30 530i to trundle around in. As it's AUC it has a year's warranty so should be broadly hassle-free motoring too. I think with way things are heading economically there might be some decent cars at sensible prices in the next 6-12 months so something a little spicier might be revisited next year.

I sold mine too.

I will echo exactly what Sly Fox said above, it was crazy fast but absolutely no fun!

I can imagine if you lived in Germany and had an autobahn commute then it would be in it’s natural habitat, sadly in the UK I found it to be much too big and too fast with no drama.

A real looker though!

Oddly enough I thought that about the 840i a few weeks ago - it's the same size as the M6 and I was giving it a bit of a hustle. It felt a bit naughty shovelling something that size along even with 'just' 340bhp. I remember wondering at the time just how rapid the M8 Comp must be and where could you ever use it...!

If I'm honest that probably factored a little bit into my subsequent decision to get what I did for now.

Would still love an M6 (or M8!) though... biggrin

well thanks Sly and Mbug that's really helpful for my sell hehe

I really can't understand why you don't enjoy the drive in the M6 though, where are you taking it, to the shops???

I took mine to Northampton last week which included around the outskirts of Milton Keynes which is a series of roundabouts linked by NSL dual carriageways, it was blistering quick and enormous fun. The M1 was dull as normal with 60mph limits but it just cruises those and dispatches them in comfort which brought the average MPG back up into the late 20's and then squirting through towns and out on to some good A roads where overtaking is almost motorbike quick. It's a very well equipped comfortable place to sit.

No doubt a new M240 will be equally thrilling to drive but another £20K on top to buy and depreciation will be brutal and it's not exactly a looker is it wink Quiet too with filters left right and centre I expect as a new car, my son has a M235 and it's very very noisy yes

Maybe my short post came across quite negative, at the end of the day the M6 GC is an enormously capable car but I just didn't happen to gel with it.
It did feel really special and there is no doubting its performance, I took it down to the Pyrenees a couple of times and the drive through France was so fast and comfortable. The trouble was the car is so effortlessly fast it would get me into trouble.

I am so glad I scratched the itch, and would urge anyone else looking into an M6 GC to do the same. I struggle to think of a car that delivers in so many ways, it just wasn't for me.

I used to have the old F22 B58 M240i with MPE (bought new). Lack of differential and proper suspension was a let down and it usually ran out of gas at the topmost rev. I kept it for some time after acquiring M6GCComp

Is there so much difference between M6GCComp and non-Comp? I had never driven non-Comp before.

The M6 showed up the M240i in cornering and body roll, the V8 boom after 4000rpm. After getting rid of M240i, I got a Cayman S PDK with all the drivetrain option including PTV.

However the allure of my M6 remains and the Cayman despite is magic like handling especially in Sport+, has not made me wants to get rid of M6. M6 is beautiful to look at, it is quick in the corner and extremely fast in straight line. It has no latest version and all current fast BMW V8 are still using the same engine and so far, in unofficial rolling races, no car (including F90 M5, jaguar F type, Audi RS6) has been able to live with it. It is pitiful at drag races.

Mine is a daily drive with individual frozen black colour and individual interior. Genuine BMW carbon rear spoiler, grille after market rear diffuser and genuine BMW front lip with wider rear Michelin Pilot Sport 4S. However, because of mounting mileage, the value is dropping and selling it would not buy me equivalent newer car in terms of price

Fuel consumption is a killer but you can get 27mpg from daily driving, if you do 50mph until the engine is like more than 90 degree and you avoid Sport plus

But when you press it, drive it manually, keep the rev on the right side of 4000rpm. Oh la la.

Well the only cars I could think of changing my M6GCCOMP for within BMW stables are M8Comp (Coupe) or M5CS. Currently, both are a lot of pounds for cars I don’t need.

LOL i'll confuse you even more now by saying i've ordered a G87 M2, delivery around November time.
M240i has been great - so liveable as a daily driver, but i missed the M'ness. So i splurged a bonus on the new M2. driving

Don't get me wrong, the M6GC was a great car, and i had some great drives down to Cornwall and Wales, but like others have said i didn't quite gel with it. Plus nothing will get around the point that it was huge. Hopefully i'm getting closer to my ideal car now. I'll know by the end of the year. Or maybe not biggrin

Still got mine, still absolutely loving it cloud9
I just cannot think of a car to replace it.

It still astounds me how good it is at so many things. For me, it seems to be the most of the best bits of all the best cars I've owned distilled into one package. The performance, the looks, the comfort, the practicality - all fantastic.

The only downsides for me are:

1) I wish it had the switchable 4WD that the latest M3/4 have. 600bhp (Comp model) is a lot for RWD in Scotland, and the extra power that the Comp model has would compensate for the additional weight 4wd brings.
2) I wish the softest suspension setting was a bit softer. Again, maybe it's the fault of being the Comp model with the lowered suspension, (but then again, I wouldn't want the raised ride height of the std model (yes, I'm a fussy bugger biggrin ))
3) I know modern BMW's (eg M4 CSL) have been derided for having an auto box, and the M6GC's DCT works brilliantly when you're on it, but sometimes (not often) the box is a little clunky and the current M autobox would probably suit the car better.

But all that said, if those changes were made, there's a chance that it would have lost its bona fide M car status.... https://youtu.be/7-yCupxxErM?t=332

Hi all.

Wondering if anyone can save me going through all 40 odd pages of the thread biggrin

I am toying with the idea of an M6. We need a 2nd car, and whatever I buy will get driven quite rarely (say 3000 miles a year) so buying something that isn't going to tank from a depreciation point of view is a factor (i.e. no point buying a £80k car to just sit on the driveway and drop to £30k over 4 years).

Whilst an M6 being a "sensible" choice seems outrageous at first, I think picking up a £25k one of these is surely better than buying a 2-3 year old car that's still dropping by a tonne every year.

For context the PCP calculators on auto trader show the cheapest 840d's dropping by £23k in 4 years.....

Anyway, away from man maths justification, curious on running costs. I've had an M6 before but only kept it a few weeks, so never had it serviced etc.

Can I please ask if anyone can give some ideas around;

- Service intervals
- Service costs
- BMW warranty extension cost (if I was able to get Approved Used with 12 months warranty would look to extend if possible)

What I want to avoid is saving money on depreciation but paying £5k a year to keep the thing running!

Many thanks

Harry Rule

I've got an F10 M5 so much the same car.

Service intervals are every two years or around 15,000 miles, although many advocate that this is too long and an oil and filter change should be done at the halfway point.

A minor service, which is engine oil, oil filter and microfilter is around £400-500.

The major service, which is the minor service plus air filter and spark plugs is £700-800.

Brake fluid service is about £80 and the vehicle check service is about the same.

Front discs and pads are about £1,300 and rear discs and pads about £800.

These are BMW dealer prices.

I've just renewed the warranty on mine and it was about £850 for the year, that's for the comprehensive warranty with roadside assistance and a £250 excess.

That warranty price is for a car with less than 60,000 miles on it, the price goes up massively if the car has more than 60k miles.

Excellent, thank you Harry!

Nothing particularly daunting in there, all roughly as expected - if anything warranty is a bit less than I thought!

If I can pick up a BMW approved used, just serviced with 12 months warranty and sub 40k miles I'd be comfortable based on above.

Thanks again.

My former car is for sale at Fisher Performance cars in the Midlands you'll struggle to find a better equipped car with a total full dealer SH and not a boring black interior. 10K more miles than your ideal but ................... You'd better hurry they have someone coming to see it this weekend!!

I bought one of the M6 GC Comps that was shown here and dailied it for a year, loved it. I love the QF more but never owned one. Thoughts on it?

I'd also be interested to hear your thoughts on the Alfa; I've owned my M6GC for three years now and I can't think of any other car that can do what the BM can, but the Alfa is the only car that I've felt is in the same realm.
