So it’s all very well people saying how manuals are so much better but it all depends on how good the manual is. It seems to be a very sorry state of affairs that good manuals are a dying breed.
I do agree that decent manuals are few and far between nowadays, but if you really enjoy cog swapping yourself...a DCT/Auto just doesn't cut it...even though they're technically amazing and much faster.

Is there any possibility of relocating to a less congested part of the country?

Then the car can be fun to drive all the time, rather than needing to be fun to sit in traffic in...

Did you get any further with this, OP?

I bought a manual E90 M3 2 years ago, and loved it beyond words, had a few autos in the past but manual has always been the one for me. When I realised I could be in a position to have an expensive car for reasonable monthlies I decided to jump ship to a 997.2 C2S PDK after a year, a 911 being a dream car of mine to own.

I loved it initially, incredibly beautiful, great spec and a proper sports car, but after the honeymoon period I found the PDK very boring and the car too grippy overall which meant unless you were on the edge it wasn't offering much fun. Plus I missed having three pedals from my E90.

I decided to look into an M2 after about 8 months of owning the 911 (and not being able to find the perfect V8 M3), but it had to be a manual. I had a nightmare of a time getting my dealer to arrange a drive out in a manual as they were apparently 'super rare', however they managed to find me one and I went out for an extended test drive. I short I loved it, especially stepping out of the PDK and into a manual.

I got a lecture from the sales guy that it would be suicide to buy a manual, but I think that was mainly because they had a DCT in the showroom they wanted rid of. I guess this may be true for an M3 / M4 manual but the M2 shouldn't have much effect on residuals in a manual box (I hope).
The odd day in general traffic I sometimes thing of having a DCT, but not for long, a manual shift isn't exactly a difficult thing.

Of the 106 M2's on autotrader, 22 are manual so in my mind that makes it a rare beast and I certainly don't regret it - the only thing I can't wait to get rid of are the god awful wheels!

Great to hear you found one you liked after the 911. I’m still looking although now selling my house so car purchase will have to wait!!

Yes. Agree the M2 is nice and compact, and aggressive looking.

Re E46 it wasn’t an M3 and tbh it was a 51 plate so quite a while ago. It was reminiscent rather than me being able to remember exactly what it was like. Just more alive, unlike the Golf.

M3/M4 might be out of reach in any case due to my no claims situation. Don’t much like the thought of dropping a grand or more on insurance.

Pleased you like the DCT though.

Any thoughts on colour?
The M2 might be shorter, but it's extremely wide. The mirrors actually make it wider than my GTR.

Seeing it in the flesh, they look anything but compact.
