I deliberate over cars a lot. I literally want to try every car out there.

With this in mind the wife and I were talking last night about me wanting a new car. This normally annoys her lol. I've been given approval to get an F10 M5. Question is, is it really worth it over my W211 E55? My E55 has 520 bhp and to get it to over 600 bhp would cost me a few more grand. On top of the purchase price I would have less than £13k in it. An M5 with a warranty from BMW is in the mid £20k range.

I know I need to drive an M5 to make sure I like it, but I am starting to wonder if I am getting a faster car and a better car if I replaced my E55 with one. I've seen people who now own W212 E63's after owning an E55 and regret selling it.

Has anyone had an E55 and then an F10 M5? What are your thoughts?

Also, would you leave one on your drive or would you garage it only? I have no garage so driveway is my only option.

Thanks

I always think that the M division after the (at the time at least) criticism of the lack of torque from the E60 M5, went all out to address this in the F10 M5 and created an M5 that is not that far from the torque rich delivery traditionally associated with AMG. So yes, given the horsepower (most are in reality above 600 bhp), torque and DCT (which should be a revelation after your 5 speed traditional autobox) you would get a faster, more frugal and certainly much more modern car, but if it is worth putting in 20.000 pounds is entirely up to you.

I think you need to drive one, preferably an extended test drive, as I am still after 5 months with mine learning about its Dr Jekyll/Mr Hyde personality. Great car, extremely pleased with mine.

You need to drive an F10. I personally think its worth the upgrade from an E55 AMG, but you need to feel it for yourself.

Can you not change the gearbox on he E55k for a for more modern autobox which will radically improve mpg and Male it faster.
Fabricate new bell housing cannot be that difficult can it.

Not much direct help but was thinking of doing similar and parting with my minty E39 M5 for an f10 M5. All my car knowledgable friends (actual experts rather than car review readers) told me I was insane and if I had to, go for an E90 M3. I've kept the E39. Don't know if you've driven an f10 yet but whilst they are extremely swift, comfortable and cheap, they don't elicit much emotion. I would like bluetooth and dab though. My tape deck aux converter isn't great...

Always wanted a w211E55 estate with those little seats in the boot.

For DAB you need to buy newer than 2012.

There is a guy in the UK who has done a manual conversion, but it was not cheap. To put the 7G box on would probably not fit either. It would also need the gearbox ECU. The 5 speed is also supposed to be a lot stronger than the 7G box.

I have owned a W211 E63 AMG estate a few years go and loved it. However coming from a old chassi to a F10 will be mind blowing not to mention the power delivery difference.

My E61 (other then build quality) is leaps and bounds over the E63 in my eyes and the F10 will be another leap on.

My advice to you would be to take a F10 for a test drive, you certainly won't be looking back.

The F10 M5 is a great modern super saloon but performance per pound don't think you can beat a W211 E55,they have a great following and can easily tuned if that's your thing, seen a few doing 1/4 mile runs in the 10 second range which is bonkers for a big saloon!

The F10 M5 is a mid 7 second to 100mph whereas the E55k is 10.5-11seconds. I’d say most of that is the gearbox

The E55 is quick over the quarter. The "quickest" in the UK is in the low 11's I think. There is a guy on another forum who is looking at getting his into the 10's next year.

The gearbox is strong but it is slow. Mine has a TCU update to make the changes faster but it is still slow changing.

Thought the E55 was around 9.5 to 100mph..all pretty irrelevant on todays choked up UK roads anyways smile

E55k is 255bhp/tonne
F10 M5 is 295bhp/tonne

E55k is 476bhp
F10 M5 is 560bhp
Both are apparently under rated some say he E55k is actually 500bhp and likewise some say the F10 M5 is over 600bhp out of the box

I disagree. The party piece for these type of cars is the ridiculous amount of pace they gather from 70+ onwards.
