M2 used prices post Competition
Discussion
Another year later. How are things looking now?
At the £30k price-point there seems to be plenty of choice, with the cheapest around the £27k mark.
So it doesn't seem that the M2C has had too much of a devastating effect on M2 residuals. Still plenty of demand for the standard M2.
I, for one, would have one in a heartbeat if i could make the maths work

Great cars at 25-30k. Thing there's more to come off them yet though, particularly as M2 C are creeping towards 35k almost.
Very tempting at those sort of prices; I’m casually keeping an eye on them because I fancy one after my M140i. I was convinced that a comp was the way to go mainly because stuff like the seats differentiate the interior from a normal 1/2 series but there’s quite a big gap on AUC’s which makes the non-comp a bit more compelling.I am also keeping one eye on AUC cars, a competition is probably exactly what i want but they are 100-200 a month more, which makes an m2 LCI seems such good value for money.
From what i have seen a lot of low mileage 18 reg M2 on AUC but dont seem to be selling until they are down in the 32k region. Had a fair few saved on autotrader from 35-36k that have been on there 12-16 weeks until they get to 32k and are suddenly gone.
Anyone gone from M140i to M2?

How much happier are you?
My M140 is lightly modded so it will be a step back in power but a large step up in looks and handling. the deals might be too good to pass up at the moment.
Yes, though I do wish I'd held out for M2 Competition, although my Mineral Grey is the best colour. Shame M2C doesn't have it.My M140 is lightly modded so it will be a step back in power but a large step up in looks and handling. the deals might be too good to pass up at the moment.
It's different enough to the M135i, sure power upgrade isn't much but it's the experience, handling, drive etc makes it worth it.

The M2 is far from a lightweight , stripped out back to basics road racer , I don't think 55kg increase or less than a 4% increase is going to have much of a detrimental effect..
In fact the chassis improvements, bigger brakes and extra power will more than address it.
In fact it may well be an even more engaging and entertaining drive.
55kg is like having a 8 and a half stone passenger next to you. Its a fair bit for a small car isnt it?In fact the chassis improvements, bigger brakes and extra power will more than address it.

In all honesty, who genuinely feels a reduction in performance when they have a sub 9 stone passenger, or a full tank of fuel rather than quarter tank?
On the road this makes little difference
It's the hardware changes to bushings and suspension that make a difference, along with software for the engine and geometry

As of today, there are only x2 AUC manual M2s. One Comp (ex Joe Achilles I believe) and one original that is "coming soon".
The rarity may explain why prices have firmed up of late.
I am very keen to try a manual Comp having only drive DCT M2s in the past. How does the shift quality feel compared to say a Porsche? I'm a big fan of Porsche GT car shift feel; short, heavily sprung and very direct. The rarity may explain why prices have firmed up of late.
I've driven a manual E46 M3 (which is an old car now) and thought the shift quality was terrible. Notchy, long and a bit like steering coal. A 275 Cup-S was much better.

Gear shift quality on the M2 Comp is far better than what I experienced in 993 and Boxster. No doubt helped by the stick being directly connected to the box rather than by linkages. So if we accept that the benchmark for shift quality and feel is the S2000's and gets a 10 out of 10, this is how I would mark the others that I have owned or driven:I've driven a manual E46 M3 (which is an old car now) and thought the shift quality was terrible. 275 Cup-S: 5
E46 M3: 6
M2: 7
986/987: 8 (never driven a GT(X))

Another chunk of time has passed.
There is now plenty of choice of AUC OG M2s for sub £30k. A few higher mileage non AUC from £26k ish.
So i think they've dropped a little in the last year, but not as much as i had hoped.
Then again, i think covid has skewed the market quite a bit. M140is are still holding firm at £19k ish for an AUC. IMO there's always going to be a gap between the two of at least £5k. Why buy an M140i if an M2 was only a gew grand more? So i think it's a case of the tail wagging the dog!
Personally i still want an OG DCT in long beach blue. A pre march 2017 car to avoid the higher 6 year long tax bracket. The way prices are, i'll probably be waiting a while, so maybe a comp would be viable but that means waiting until 2024-25 for the 2018+ cars to fall out of high tax.

My old car very well looked after 11.5k miles, never saw a salty road and a £306 agm battery on the day I px’ed it
