Who knows what abuse the engine endured before the internals staged their little jailbreak,
I am surprised by the number of M car owners that take the variable rev limit (6K when cold, 8K when hot) as guidance and hit 6k within minutes of a cold start. That can't be helpful for engine longevity. But surely good for street cred!

It has nothing to do with the driver, unless he has never changed the oil in his car! Bmw m cars should be able to do burnouts and sit on the limiter! The current cars just arent made as well as the old ones its as simple as that.
10 years ago my e36 m3 would donut and do burnouts all day long, as would my friends with 150k on it....along with numerous other e30 and e36 coupes or e39 m5s that friends had. Both people I know of that have had e90 m3s or e60 m5s have had nothing but problems without the hammering the 90s cars had. They are just not made to be driven hard.

But the e3x m3 was a lower revving turbo unit not a highly tuned, high revving N/A unit. Not sure thats an apple to apples comparison. Was the engine in the e39 a turbo 6? I'd imagine raving is probably less stressful then sitting on the limiter, after all that's unlikely to happen when raving as you would change up surely? 10 years ago my e36 m3 would donut and do burnouts all day long, as would my friends with 150k on it....along with numerous other e30 and e36 coupes or e39 m5s that friends had. ? For clarity the first M3/M4 ever to be turbo charged is the F30 M3 (the current shape one) before that everything was normally aspired (that’s no turbo no super charger)

F30 and F8X models are both turbocharged straight 6.
E30,E36, E46 and E9X are NA high revving engines, E30 being 4 cylinder, 4 valve, E36 and E46 being straight 6, 4 valve with Vanos/Valvetronic, rev range up to 8000. E9X being V8, 4 valve, valvetronic, basically a shortened version of the V10 in the E60 M5, rev range up to 8500.
