Hi,

I’m looking at a 66 plate F30 320D M Sport (November 2016 registered) for sale at an independent dealer.

The car has 56k miles currently. On the iDrive system the first service carried out was in March 2018 (42k miles), second service (not done by bmw main dealer and not on iDrive system) done at 53k miles.

Is it possible the obc could have recommended the first service at this mileage? Or could there have been a service done before this but not logged on the system?

Also, does this any of this void the manufacturers warrant which should run til November 2019?

Thanks

I've seen people get to around 25k before needing a service. 42k is far too long. I highly doubt they got that far before the car asked for a service.

If it was done on time the service will have a green marker next to it on the idrive.

It's a popular car with plenty of supply. It's not a car you have to risk a dubious history.

I think it's more likely service/s haven't been logged. Even BMW dealers can be sloppy, they've forgotten to update my service history once.
I have the same engine in a 2017, not a 3 series, and on day 1, 19,000 was the miles until oil service due. In my case it dropped to nearer 17k. But it could well go up a bit for a softer (say M/way) driving style.
I'm not sure of the exact terms of the manufacturer's warranty, i.e. whether claims are disallowed if the car hasn't been serviced correctly. But I think it's a strong possibility as such terms exist in the other warranty products, for example if you were to extend beyond the first 3 years.
If you wish to pursue, you could ask dealer to take car into the local BMW garage and see if reading the key clarifies it's history.
I don't know if that will evidence a service/s performed by any garage or just a BMW dealer or independent with the correct software to properly update iDrive.

Alternatively, find one with pukka service records.

Is it something an owner could ignore once it asks for a service? Or is there a constant reminder? (I’ve never had a bmw with iDrive)

Find it hard to believe someone would buy a new car and not service it on time, that’s why I was wondering if it was possible a service was carried out but not updated on the car?

I probably will look at alternatives, it’s just this one is price below others.

Cheers, I might just do that as there is a BMW dealer just 5 miles away from this dealer.

In my experience if it was done late BMW log it as so. It comes up orange on the service schedule in the car.

If it’s not orange, perhaps one was just missed and not logged in the computer.

So if it is orange like in the picture it means it’s a late service and if it’s green it’s more than likely that a first service was carried out?

To be fair, I was told that by someone and never really questioned it. I shouldn’t have stated it as fact.

But there is usually a reason for low pricing!

My 123d got it's 1st service just after 18k miles which was a few hundred late, but not enough to upset the warranty.

I bailed out of it after reading about BMW N47 engine cam-chain issues as the warranty had expired.

Phone BMW with the reg number and they will tell you if it was serviced before 42K. If no history of servicing before 42K walk away.

Checked with BMW and it seems like there has been no service before 42k mile 😬 I’ll give this car a miss anyway

About 18k between services is about right

The service display will show an orange OK if the work has been done .. but late

I have one on my X3 for rear brakes ... 100 miles overdue when changed !

There are hundreds and hundreds if not a thousand 320d M sports on the BMW AUC website starting at 12k I'd go get one from a dealer and have the BMW warranty.

No need to be looking at dodgy cars with no service history.

Cheers lads! Another quick question! I’ve moved from Ireland and I’ve never bought a car in the UK before, so are prices on autotrader negotiable? I hear a lot about “fixed pricing” and the car being the cheapest on autotrader so no room for negotiation!

Any price anywhere is negotiable in terms of buying a car. Walk away from anyone who wont even entertain it.

So if it’s with an independent dealer/main dealer and the cash price is £14,950 how much can I negotiate? Are we talking £100/200 or is it possible an offer of £14,000 could buy it? (I know each circumstance is different but I don’t want to be completely ignorant going into this smile )

Start at £10k if you like!
Depends on what you actually think its worth based on what else is available.

Be prepared to walk away though.

I got my 335d to 20890 miles, but 42k is impossible.

It’s really hard to judge

It depends on many things .. how much they paid for it, how long they’ve had it, whether it’s an in demand model/spec

But yes, discounts can be had .. I recently managed £4K off the screen price of an ex demo Mini which was probably helped by the fact it was a high spec diesel and they’d had it over six months

If they won’t budge and you think it’s too much ... walk

They may ring you .. if they don’t there’s thousands of 3 series out there

Good luck with the hunt
