As a past E60 & F10 M5 owner, its great to see so many familiar names posting in this thread smile Our kids are now out of the nest and for a while now I have been daydreaming about what fun car I was going to buy to exploit my new found car freedom,. Started off wanting a Nissan GTR (long term desire) and then got distracted by others like the AMG GTR, 981 GT4, R8 V10, M3 CS, etc but the more I read and watched I found myself going full circle back to an M5! I don't need 5 seats or the space but it's just such an epically compelling vehicle. An M5C could be the last of a very long line of V8's.

This is a great thread, lots of info, and if I followed it properly pre Sept 2019 cars do not have a GPF so have the best sound with pops/bangs. Then Sept 2019 brought the GPF, loss of pop/bangs but the upgraded 12.3" screen, digital dash and upgraded idrive. Sept 2020 saw the LCI which brought some minor but worthwhile cosmetics changes. I also read a few pages back that it gains the M8 gearbox - is that just better software as this is the first mention I seen of a different box?

Its hard to know which is best and as I won't be buying until mid-year I will wait to see where the market goes. The LCI is deeply appealing apart from the tamer exhaust.

Some people did exceedingly well last year with the non-comp run out, £30-32k discount translating to cars sold for around the £60k mark.

Now the best deals for LCI comp seem to be around the low to mid £80’s and 2.9%. It would be interesting to hear more from anyone who has bought recently.
I fired off an enquiry today on a new LCI M5C to see what was out there. The quote came back at £9k down/£1044pcm on a 107k list price. A world away from the deals around last year! I am guessing supply will be well down this year so is there any reason to think the big deals will be back? If not maybe I just give up on the better tech and get a pre GPF car....

A a serial M5 owner ( I've had 6 ) , I for some reason made the mistake of usually having them as weekend cars and running something else as a daily . The reason was that I convinced myself that I needed 4/5 seats for the children at weekends etc but in reality never got to use the performance with them on board and any m5 would be wasted on my commute .

Now the children have flown the nest and you don't need 5 seats ( or have something else for when you do ) I'd really question why you'd go for an m5 when those other cars mentioned and other similarly focused cars, would more likely give you what you want.
Don't get me wrong, the current m5 is an epic car but I've never wanted to get up early on a Sunday morning and go 40 miles for the papers in any m5.
Still would have the current one in a heartbeat though smile

Just to put you right, The 12" screen came in in 2020 September, this and a host of changes, you need to check the web site for the list of changes on the LCI, I had the F90 2019/2020 model this LCI is both quicker (M8 gearbox/and software) and better looking.

After owning an E39, E60, F10 and now F90 M5 I can say that as an allrounder the F90 is up there with the E39 M5, and I must eat humble pie for considering that the 4WD would detract anything from its character. It has rather made it a supreme allweather weapon, and it is bonkers quick, while still retaining the everyday comfort and usability. For me it is really the complete package, with which I do 1000 km autobahn stints, take the dog to the forest (rear seat in suitable covers), go to the supermarket, and occasionally also get up early on a Sunday morning just to have a blast. And after the muted F10 M5, I am very happy to discover that the exhaust note finally is very good indeed (mine is pre-OPF and with M Sport exhaust, which no doubt helps).Simply a brilliant car!

In theory, you are of course spot on, why would someone be attracted to an M5 over an AMG GTR or Nissan GTR and I have been asking myself the same. The AMG GTR has a fantastic interior and noise and that gives it a big edge over the Nissan. I think I am attracted to Q cars and the M5 is the ultimate Q car and is ballistically fast with great tech. That is such a compelling mix and I am finding it hard to resist, the excellent AWD system is the icing on the cake and allows you to access the power in a way you never could in an F10. The AMG GTR is rare and achingly beautiful and for those reasons alone it should be my ideal car, but it is the opposite of a Q mobile.

The AMG E63s is also calling me, it has better sound and a more interesting interior but in other ways, I may prefer the M5. It also seems to depreciate harder which if I buy used is attractive. I have never understood why the E63 drops even harder than an M5.

Anyway I rambling, I guess once I have watched every video on YouTube I will need to make a decision 

Thanks for the correction. The LCI seems to have enough going for it to be worth considering over a used car. It seems nearly all M5C's are hampered by an OPF so the only price you pay for an LCI is the loss of the pops/bangs, which is a shame.

Auto trader are showing some pre-reg or pre-delivery cars at £20-21k discount to around the low 80’s so I would take that as a starting point. There’s some nearly new AUC LCI cars in the 70’s.

This is a lot of car for the money given than they come well specified as standard. An equivalent spec F10 would have cost the same.

These are still £900/month or so on 2.9% with 10% deposit. A future 0% campaign would make a big difference to the figures

Minor correction, but the M8 gearbox and improved launch was introduced Sep 2019 build. I.e. pre LCI.

Similar M car experience as you and have an F90 M5C currently, looking to upgrade to LCI model, I would agree with every word of this.

Out of interest, I got a quote yesterday on an M5C with Visibility/comfort/technology packs. It came in at a 22k discount, 12k down, and 950pcm over 4 years. The interest rate is 2.9%, 0% would bring that to around £800pcm and since I am not buying until mid-year I will keep an eye on what BMW offer in Q2.

I can't help wondering if this will be the last great V8 as the tide is turning quickly against these mega performance petrol cars, I would look to keep the car for a good few years as I will only do light mileage.

I don’t believe that. Hybrid, yes. Maybe a 6 cylinder. smile

Edit to add I just gooogled it and rumour has it it’s 1006hp. Don’t forget the 6. Piped in v8 noises? Still think it’s bks. The next variant yes

That’s exactly my thinking too. 0% I could stomach as I did for my F10 which is nearing 6 years old now, but I used that as a daily and accrued mega miles on it. If I bought an F90 it would be another long term purchase without intending to run it to the moon and back.

BMW would have me if 0% came back, that would be irresistible. You have done well to keep your F10 for so long. I loved ours for the two years we had it.

Question for past F10 and now F90 owners - how do you find the ZF box with torque converter? Does the torque converter dull the immediacy and drivetrain feedback you get from a DCT box? Does the car still engine brake on trailing throttle?

I’m not an owner but I borrowed an F90 from an accident management company and put 2500 miles on it over the course of several weeks including a trip to France and Belgium, then jumped back in my F10.

Personally I preferred the DCT, hydraulic steering and M multifunction seats of the F10 and it seemed a shame that these were retrograde steps in its successor. The F90 is by far the better car overall though.

Firstly I would have paid extra to have a DCT in my F90...it is a more engaging box than the ZF.
Yet the ZF box is pretty good...in the most aggressive setting its quick and fairly firm.
I drive using the paddle shift all the time and find it pretty entertaining...its not that far off the DCT and I suppose more in character with the car.
Took mine out in the snow the other day and that was fun on summer tyres. Accelerating was ok...slowing down not so much!!

I find the ZF a much better all rounder and suits the character of the car better than the dct. 99% as good when flat out and better everywhere else (I.e. 99% of the time mooching in traffic). Re earlier comments, I find the steering much improved on the CP over the standard M5 (and earlier F10), much better turn in. The seats are also phenomenal. I’ll miss the V8 when it’s gone and think my next daily will likely be fully electric; not convinced on V6 hybrid......

I just dread the day IF fully electric cars take over, I can't see it TBH, not in the next TEN years or so. I will be last person to buy one.
