Test driven the new X4M

Drove it for 24 hours , a few different roads , summing up: £81K specced to my M5 Comp, Yep these things are silly money and should not sell at that price.
It does go so well IMO will in a straight line beat the current M3/4 it's that quick, fuel economy was 25MPG with booting when I could and using all modes. I did notice it does not like 8th gear under 60/65 MPH !!, the car was run-in and had the RIS.
It comes with a lot of toys, Adaptive cruise, park assist +, heated seats,carbon inside, electric seats and full leather and some other safety aids.
It was comfortable and quiet on 21 inch rims with MPS4S, even on some st roads it was good, cornering was very good for a 4*4 it kept fairly flat.
No rattles inside but I felt it was a bit lower rent than my M5 Comp for £81K I expected a lot more.
Very roomy and so quick, the new M3/4 is going to be FAST and as I said this will beat the current crop.
Will I buy one >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>NOPE way overpriced but for an SUV it will be ahead of most on the road if want it to be.

Interesting thoughts..... I had an X3M on loan for 48 hours as considering as a run around for my wife and my conclusions were quite different.
I thought the ride quality on 21’s was truly shocking. So much firmer than my M5 Comp and totally out of kilter for what is required in this type of car and it just would not settle on anything other than billiard smooth roads. A complete disaster. Also as a comparison my X5M is much much more comfortable and feels considerably quicker with the V8 torque.
The engine sounds ok but is really struggling with a lack of torque- needing to work the paddles hard to keep it above 4K. This will probably be fine in an M3/M4 but a shortfall in type of vehicle. The car felt very sluggish in normal driving. The current M4 would destroy this in a straight line above 30 mph in all but the worst of weather.
I agree the interior is a let down. No way does it feel £80k. If anything, it illustrates how good the X3M40 is. I’d be amazed if anybody bought one of these after a test drive. IMO the worst M car to date, ever....

I honestly think you must have had a bad one, or was it not run in?, this thing FLEW and was in no way harsh on any road surface and the A11 approaching Norwich is like a railroad track. I would put this up against any F80 M3 (I've had two). I thought the ride quality on 21’s was truly shocking. No, it only had 800 miles on the clock so still fairly fresh. It felt plenty fast at the top end, it was just gutless low down. Sounds like you have much more experience of current M4 than me but I still think it doesn’t feel that fast.rassi said:

I take that Joe's reviews as CRAP basically, soory he says the M5 STD and the M5 comp are "two different cars" I've owned both and they are not.garystoybox said:

I think with miles you would feel a bit different, but I do agree it needed 2500 RPM to get really going, a bit sluggish if you will.garystoybox said:

Does a 'run around for the wife' need to be an M version?I thought the ride quality on 21’s was truly shocking. I'd have thought something 2.0 petrol would suffice - or does that not cut the dash in the social circles?

Of course you’re right.... silly me thinking a woman should be able to handle anything more than 200bhp or that she might want to have some fun and enjoyment or be a petrolhead. I better go and tell her that she can’t drive the 488 or M5 anymore as well and no more track days.I'd have thought something 2.0 petrol would suffice - or does that not cut the dash in the social circles?

I’ve got a new X3M on a mega deal after having two faulty x3 m40i. I had one on a test drive for 48hours and I didn’t find the ride too bad but it’s certainly a lot firmer than the m40i. In all honesty I think the m40i is probably a better family vehicle but I much preferred the look, handling, sound and performance of the X3M though you need to get it over 2500rpm.

BMW UK stepped in and put a good support package if I ordered another vehicle. The dealership itself have been excellent to deal with from the start. Just good customer service.The X3 as a family vehicle is hard to beat and has loads of space without being too big like an x5, q7 etc...
3rd time lucky so fingers crossed.
