Test driven the new X4M
Discussion
I was due to collect my new X4M Competition tomorrow but received a call this morning to say there’s a registration block by BMW, which includes X3M as well, due to a software issue.
The deal itself was outrageous. The car has a list price of £85k with all the options, yet the monthly payments are just £70 a month more than a new Volkswagen T-Roc R at £40k, with a similar upfront deposit and annual mileage. Guess I’ll just have to wait a little longer.

There is a delivery stop on F97/F98 - however, as long as the vehicle software has been updated to the latest ISTA release then the car can be delivered. Bought it from Eastern BMW in Edinburgh. It’s a high spec car with £5k deposit @ £517 a month. They had 2 lower spec cars left in stock at £475 a month with some nice bits, but no panoramic sunroof, adaptive cruise control or 360 camera which I need to reverse into my driveway. An absolute no brainer deal compared to quotes I had for RSQ4 or Macan Turbo.
Cheers for the replySo £5k down, £475 pm? I think I might give them a call later today. See what’s achievable

After a small delay I collected my X4M Competition today. I’ve covered 100 miles and thought I’d leave a my initial impressions. Prior to driving it I was concerned regarding the ride quality, as I’d probably watched too many Youtubers complaining about It. Yes it’s firm, but in my opinion it’s not as firm as it’s been made out. It reminds me of my 911 Turbo (991.2) in that the low speed ride below 50 MPH is harsh but I reckon it smooths out as the speed rises. Manhole covers are best avoided around town but that’s a compromise I’m happy to make to have better body control at higher speed.
Fuel consumption was 19.2 MPG with just a couple of very brief blasts. I’ll aim for 20 MPG next time, but it’s what I expected from a near 2,000 KG SUV with 510 PS. You shouldn’t buy one of these if you are concerned about economy. It feels like it will be rapid once it’s fully run in. I like the revvy nature of the power delivery, unlike some of the reviews I’ve read. The engine note is quite muted but it does sound better than my 911 Turbo in comparison. It steers nicely for a performance SUV and the brakes are strong too. My biggest complaint are the exterior mirrors which are huge and cause a massive blind spot.
The quality of the car itself is very good and the PCP terms are outrageous value for money. No wonder they are just about sold out in the UK. I can’t wait to have the first service completed and try out the performance properly.

Good to read some "real" views and not just the youtube stuff that it seems is largely questionable at best. I agree that the ride is firm but it is an M car and I also agree that it is better at speed. It certainly doesn't jump about over the road as one youtube "expert" claimed.
Having said that I'm still without mine after 2 weeks in the dealer having the turbos repaired. Failed after 600 miles. I'm missing it.

Back home after my first proper blast up the wonderful A93 to Braemar in my X4M Competition. It’s an epic road and one I’ve enjoyed over the years in various hot hatches and super cars. I was really keen to see how the X4 coped with the twists and turns, along with the sharp crests.
A friend tagged along in his Golf R to compare them. It’s fair to say I’m rather surprised at the ability of the X4. Some have complained about the need to rev out the engine but I think it’s actually one of the best features of the car. It makes it feel less turbo charged and there’s linear power all the way up the rev range. If you don’t enjoy revving an engine to unleash its potential, buy a diesel. It’s not nearly as laggy as my 570S was on the same road, and the gearbox is outstanding. Super fast changes and holds onto the gears in manual mode without reverting back too quickly into auto. I had the engine in Sport with the steering and suspension in comfort. The other settings were too aggressive for the bumpy and twisty road.
It’s a quick car, easily pulling away from the Golf R and it can carry some decent corner speed, especially in the cold, wet conditions today. Brakes are very strong and the body control is good, especially over the crests but it does need a firm hand if you want to make brisk progress. The Golf R could not make any ground up under braking or through the corners, and the X4 surprised me with the changes of direction. You never forget that this is not a sports car, it’s a 2 ton SUV after all, but it was really good fun. At 8/10ths it’s capable of surprising other enthusiasts, but I wouldn’t want to try harder, as I think it might just bite back.
The last time I enjoyed the A93 was in my new Vantage, which was amazing in the dry, but when it started raining it was completely lacking in grip. I’m sure the X4M Competition would have been quicker today in the conditions. Overall I returned 17.7 MPG for the trip which isn’t much worse than the 20 MPG I’ve averaged since I collected it. I think it’s a great addition to garage although my Mrs has grabbed the keys a couple of times already and is rather fond of driving it, despite not being into cars in the slightest. I can see this might become my biggest problem with the car.
