I had one for a 2 days demo. Couldn't believe the ride quality for something that's meant to be a SUV. In comfort it rides like a donkey on skeggy beech. Makes my M3 Comp feel like a magic carpet

Also the low down torque was poor

Not for me
Donkey on skeggy beach = internet won

And yet we have someone who currently has a 7-series with air suspension buying an X3M Competition and saying that, having driven one, he thinks the ride's fine! Not saying either of you are wrong but I honestly struggle to remember a car where people seem to have come to such widely different conclusions about the ride quality!

Seeing lots of these being collected on various BMW dealership facebook pages but doesnt seem to be anyone on here - nobody giving us their thoughts anyway!
They'll be too young for a web browser. Better checking out their Insta pages instead !!!

I was very surprised how bad it was. It seems effected by every ripple in the road surface. The difference between all three suspension modes is very little indeed.

Taking my daughters to school on a B road my youngest in the back was being thrown about all.over the place.

When I took it back I mentioned it to service guy (who'd let me.have it) and that day they'd had a customer bring his back complaining something was up with the suspension

All it needed was Comfort mode to actually be comfortable and it would be great

nono

I was told that M cars are not for everyone in a very condescending post after I said exactly what you have posted!

I agree as I’ve already said that the ride is very firm and absolutely not anywhere near a 7 series . But not as bad a particular YouTube reviewer would have you believe.

That’s the least of my worries now anyway. After 650 miles mines thrown a limp mode code saying something about driveline issues and reduced power but recovery not needed. It’s now driving like a 1.8 petrol non turbo and drinking like a fish. It’s in limp mode and I’m in grumpy mode

Wow...these things are just not as well built as they used to be. We've had our M40i for 3 weeks now, 2 of those weeks have been spent in the garage for similar issues. Its being rejected and re-ordered. Though the jury is still out on the latter for us. The comms from BMW have been utterly, utterly useless

My BIL is testing an X4M currently before he probably trots off to the local stealers for a new M4CP. He’s rung to me to say he agrees with those who think it rides like a “Skeggy” donkey in comfort mode. He was disappointed & says he prefers the M4 he current pedals.

My M3 Comp is so much more compliant on all road surfaces, and the difference between all 3 modes is very noticeable unlike the x3mcomp

But I've been told off on M3cutters for comparing them

I’ve now done 700 miles in my new X3M after owning two previous m40i x3’s. Though I generally feel the X3 m40i could be potentially a better family vehicle the X3M is substantially a better drivers car and for me a more enjoyable vehicle to drive. If you want a great all rounder that can ferry the family with great performance then I don’t think you can go wrong with an X3 m40i . The X3M has a proper aggressive setup but it’s an M at the end of the day and I’m loving the whole driving experience.

I genuinely don’t think the ride is bad but if people want something a bit softer go for the m40i version. If people are looking for a vehicle to really drive but need an estate/SUV for occasionally family duties in the week then personally I don’t think you can go wrong with an X3M, especially at these prices.

Picked up my X4m today and I’ve covered around 120 miles driving it home.
I would say the ride is more firm than my old z4m and 640d with runflats so a very firm ride.

I had read the reviews and was expecting this so for me it’s not an issue. It feels like a proper M car and that’s what I wanted.
I do agree that BMW probably should have made the comfort settings a bit more.....comfortable lol but not a problem for me.

I have just picked up my X3M Competition and have done 150 miles in it. I think the ride is firm but not outrageously harsh. The car actually rides well on multiple surfaces. It's not magic carpet ride smooth like a Range Rover Sport but it's not uncomfortable. I think some of the online reviewers for YouTube and some car magazines are being a little unkind or there was something wrong with the car they were testing. In fact on the journey back from the dealership my front seat passenger fell asleep so it can't be that uncomfortable! (Maybe it was my boring conversation??)

Posted this on Bimmerpost but thought I might have more luck here: New X3M Comp arriving this week and I’m in the position of never having had an automatic car before. However, I’ve had loads of BMWs with adaptive suspension and M Cars with adjustable steering, dampers and throttle response. Just so I’m clear, in the X3, the only thing that adjusts shift speed is the button on the gear selector lever, so effectively there are 4 settings:

1 for shift (on lever)
Then Separate buttons for
2 engine map
3 suspension
4 steering

My confusion is surely the shift is affected by engine map... or maybe not? Is the ONLY thing that affects shifting the button with 3 settings on the lever...?

And - what settings to most people have all 4 separate items most of the time?

What spec did you get? I was curious about one but there was only blue red or that weird gold colour left. If there was a donnington grey with red leather I might of gone for it.

What sort of money were they? Can’t get these out of my head! And who have you been liaising with?

Speaking to dealers when I was trying to find a £549/549 car, they said there were cars built but wouldn’t get here before the year ends. Going by the reviews, I reckon this deal will be extended into 2020 (or at least hope so!)
