Can't say I've ever experienced this in my M4. It stands out a fair bit in San Marino Blue but the only attention I've had was when stopped and people complimenting the colour. I did have a weird experience on the A1M this week though when an Octavia pulled level with me, leaned on the horn, gave me a thumbs up then drove off. OK...

Picked up my M5 a couple of days ago, around 25 miles later she needed a drink so popped into a BP in Wolverhampton.

Shout from guy filling up an S3 at a distant pump: ‘that an M5 mate?’
‘Yeah mate!’
‘Aw sick bruv!’

I take it sick is a good thing these days? laugh

They say youth is wasted on the young. Seems like fast cars are wasted on the old too..

People have been saying that for an awful long time.

Having switched from an Estoril Blue M235i with the full M Performance pack which I thought stood out fair bit to a Mineral Grey M2 LCI which is completely standard apart from lowering springs, I've definitely noticed it gets a lot more attention. Nobody has tried to race me as such, not that I would entertain it in most circumstances but I've already had a few positive comments/questions in car parks/traffic. A car full of men (not lads, 40+ year olds) were asking me to launch it from the lights, mine is a manual so it's not even possible!

I think it's purely down to the road presence, an M car stands out like a sore thumb in the sea of mundane shopping trolleys due to their wide arches and quad exhausts...

It used to be dodgy racing on the road, but nowadays we have the double whammy of much more congested and speed camera covered roads, along with, in a lot of cases much, much faster cars.

Remember seeing, as a kid a Golf GTI 16 Valve racing a Celica, load of noise and fury, they were flying but those cars would be considered slow nowadays.

The performance available is mind bending, despite some saying an M5 isnt actually all that quick int he scheme of things, suppose thats true but its just additional layers of total overkill, a quick squirt off the lights and you are doing over 100 mph quicker than the aforementioned 80s cars were doing sixty.

So, its largely academic, you may out accelerate that M5 but Jesus, how fast would you be going in something capable of doing that ?

Loads of younger folk with some serious metal, locally there is a young lad, early twenties with a Hurracan Performante, his mates tend to have new German stuff like RS3's, they just have good jobs and typically, family wealth. Do see some sketchy looking chaps in stuff like that in Manchester centre, had one in an obviously tuned (noisy and stinking, so prob decatted) older S3 wanting to race me on the roads round the Mancunian way, such of his enthusiasm he sailed through a pedestrian crossing, luckily his racket had been noticed by the folk wanting to cross.

I owned my 996 for 8 years and never met the 'wanna race ya' d!ckhead. I have owned my M2 Comp for 2 weeks and have met an idiot already !
We were driving in our city centre yesterday afternoon when I noticed the car in front of me was speeding away from lights and junctions. The next junction we came to can be taken quickly if no traffic is coming and there wasn't any. The car in front sped away from me. Once I had come out of the junction he was a little way down the road. An arm came out of his window and waved goodbye to me laugh The wife and I burst out laughing. The funny thing was though I caught him up as he was waiting for the next set of lights of lights to go green biggrin
He went straight on , I went left and gave him the knuckle shuffle wave. It wasn't as if he was driving anything special. It was only a basic Honda Civic. I can see a fun few years of ownership laugh

Had this a lot in my M6 GC SMB colour.
I found it funny the first couple of weeks then it just got down right irritating. I accepted it was just people curious about its performance but still found it annoying.

I just traded my Elise Sports Racer for an SL63 AMG (5.5TT). On the drive from Leic to Yorkshire to collect it, approx 1-in-5 cars hovered in the outside lanes having a good gawp at the Lotus (replete with stripes and hard top).

During my ownership, people's opinion towards it was overwhelmingly positive. Pretty much every journey involved a compliment, question, joke about getting in/out, kids asking what it was etc.

That said, it did involve a LOT of people trying to race me. I think it was mostly to 'see what it's got' rather than trying to get one-over, if that makes sense. Truthfully, other than being very sharp off the line, it actually wasn't that quick.

In contrast, the SL seems to provoke Leicester's 'I also own a Merc' brigade into parking their white GLA 220d's half an inch from my bumper on every dual carriage way, but creating a bit of a gap is relatively easy with 590ft lbs to play with.

I get it my e36 M3 also. Constantly tailgated by hot hatches and the full array of BMW's. On the whole, I ignore them but it does grate at 0700am on a Monday morning when we're not as alert as we could be.

What does stand out though is just how small my car is against all vehicles including 1 series!

Happy New Year! I have a lowley M340i, I got abused by a SEAT something today, 40mph road, he aproaches up my jacksy then overtakes, breaks on, throws a can at the car, gives me the finger and other hand jesters and speeds off overtaking other cars into oncoming cars and blind junctions. I saw red but I pulled over, relaxed and continued on my drive. In 30 years of driving it was the oddest encounter I can remenber.

I haven't come across this at all, in fact I can't remember the last time I saw (or heard) a 'traffic light GP' round my way.

To be honest, if anyone wants to race me, then it just means they will disappear off about of my way quicker anyway! I don't get into all that in towns or cities, and nailing it off a wet cold roundabout isn't happening either this time of year!

I remember a few years ago sat bumbling a long in a RWD Escort RS Cosworth with 400bhp on tap, minding my own business sat at the traffic lights and i notice a white mk2 Golf GTI pull up alongside, i noticed the intercooler hanging out the front of it and was surprised to look over and see the passenger video recording me/car

I would love to see that video!

I have no idea what that means

Which is better
Which is more obviously fast to ordinary people?

I quite like these sorts of thread. All of the car forum archetypes get invoked.
