Im exploring a few options now that we can start test driving cars again and the M6 has crept into the list.

I am interested in what the main issues are and the related costs?

Are there any specific weak points or issues that should be fixed or expected to go wrong and budgeted for?

Thanks

Depends how it's been Maintained, and has it been Remapped. Generally they are good IF maintained.

im not planning on buying a mapped or moded car (possibly open to an aftermarket exahus) as would want any of that to be done by me.

looking to buy on fsh and good history etc

Interested if there are any bug ticket items that go e.g. clutch, brakes, any engine issues?

There is a wealth of information on the S63tu engine. You might have more luck trying M5 forums as the M6 shares many of the same components and sold in fewer numbers than the M6

Broadly

Gearbox is very good, bmw say sealed for life but some recommend fluid change after 60k miles. It is getrag

Engine is a hot vee so can be prone to heat exposure so important to warm up and cool down prior to spirited driving

Turbo coolant lines are vulnerable

Sparks and coils should be replaced often. Bmw intervals for oil change are too long so interim changes are best

Common to have a map applied but there are differing views on the impact it has on longevity. Some mapped cars are easily 100k miles, others have had engine trouble

Nothing specific to call out on consumables. It is a big heavy powerful car so enough said. People like michelin not pirelli. I have pirelli and they are atrocious in wet and when cold

It moves like a plane and drinks fuel like camel. On a spirited drive fuel consumption less than 20mpg and long motorway drive about 30mpg

I’ve got a Nov 2017 model and quite frankly been brilliant and cheap to run. Just feels huge

I had the F10 M5 then F06 M6 last 3years, 30k miles. Zero issues. The brakes are very expensive so factor in if buying one getting near a change. It drinks fuel like a thirsty 2 tonne camel, but it’s noticeably quicker! Values also seem to be firming.
