Bit of a strange one, actually, very weird.

I posted up in January that I did a deal on an F86 X6M https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...

I took delivery at the end of the month and a couple of weeks ago, I had to admit to myself, I'm not bonding with it. I know it sounds weird (pathetic?) but it's just too much car.

Flooring it with all dials turned up to 11, amazing. Grin factor, friends loved it, all good stuff. But realistically, 99.9% of the time I'm driving at the posted speed limits and when I'm doing that, I'm keeping one eye on the mpg and it's just the wrong mindset. My previous 2 cars, an e46 convertible and an X6 40D, just made me smile. Not just driving, but walking up to them, walking away from them, i would always look at them and think yeah, that's mine and it's good. This X6, it was just a car. Get in, get out, walk away.

During a break at work yesterday, started browsing the classifieds then called the supplying dealer (sytner maidenhead) and went through a long version of the above. We started talking about various options including 5/7 non-M cars, and then the dealer threw the curve ball. An M4 competition pack.

Went to visit the dealer, took a drive and yes, it's a different car but it took me back to the e46 "point and squirt-ability" and flooring it, yes it was fast, but it wasn't crap-yourself fast.

Taking advantage of the Covid pricing anomalies, they're giving me more money than I paid for the car, money off the M4, finance contribution and a few other levers they've pulled and getting me into a more expensive car for another few quid / month, and a two year warranty.

I haven't signed the deal, am picking up the car again this afternoon and bringing it how to show the wife and kids, but, again, sounds strange, it "feels" right . Wife has a Discovery Sport for family duties, my son (i'm hoping), passes his driving test in October and will have his own car, so this is firmly in the "my personal toy" territory.

What do you think of spec? The only thing I would miss would be the adaptive LED's but it does have the the regular LED's. Condition is immaculate, I believe it's a one owner car, but would be good to get an opinion on if anything key is missing.

Looks great. Lovely spec and I really like the red leather. It brightens the interior compared to the usual sea of black.

It's actually well priced for such a low mileage car, barely ran in.

Enjoy!

I went from a 530D to an M4 CP in Feb as not doing the mileage now and not likely to be, I’ve had E46 and E92 M3’s and the M4 is just awesome and I think it is quick, scarily so in the cold/damp if not careful, which is good biggrin

I feel a lot like that as well! My E92 M3 was so predictable/tame at low revs...the M4 certainly isn't! biggrin

Price is OTT for a car in a standard (free) colour and without full leather, in my opinion.

Edit: apologies, didn't read your update. I'm sure you'll have done a good deal, given you said they're giving more for you X6 than you paid. Enjoy the new one!

Congrats on the M4. Hope you enjoy it.

The acceleration on the X6M must be something if the M4C seems a bit tamer...

I don't think the M4 is really any slower. I do know that when I had a test in an X5M, whilst my own M4 CP was in for a service, the X5M felt scarily quick but I do think it was more the 'scary' than the 'quick' that did it...

It's unnerving to have such acceleration available in a very heavy, relatively 'wallowy', tall car, IMO.

Take these figures with a pinch of salt, but they imply that once you get past the M4's launch traction issues there's nothing in it.

We got the number down to sub-£40k + the PX on the X6M which meant that it was only a few pounds extra a month. I paid £36,250 for the X6M in January and they gave me just over £38k to get out of it so I think I actually got a really strong deal out of it. at least

The acceleration on the two cars is extremely different. The shove the X6 gives is just bonkers. Genuinely, genuinely bonkers. They are very very different cars (obvious statement is obvious!)

The table PorkInsider posted I think tells half the story. The numbers are great given there's a professional driver behind the wheel. I'm not and whilst I'm a good / competent / safe driver, as I said in my OP, the X6 was just "too much" and the M4 was controllable and more usable, plus the other factor was when driving around town and seeing 9-12mpg, I knew it was just silly and that tipped me over the edge to swap and I didn't lose anything financially apart from a few extra £/month

I think what I'd like about the X6M is that you can get all the power down easily, whereas in the M4 you have to drive it with a bit of thought and you can't just floor it in 2nd without having your wits about you.

Your figure compared only drag races. Regarding rolling races (when the cars are already on the move before the race), X6M is faster, the V8 is a monster. See the comparison from Zeperfs

I've spent the last 8 years moaning about the E92 M3 for various reasons(mainly the lack of torque), so Tony is just saying how predictable I am as always! smile

At last!
Incontrovertible facts.
It has taken 8 years to get here.....;-)
