arguing when the car was designed as opposed to when the car I bought was manufactured is an interesting point of view.

However only time will tell. Maybe, if we are all here in three years we'll have a 'who was living in the real world and who wasn't' closing thread.

Till then we'll have to see. Personally I think BMW like to shoot themselves in the foot.

They build a car soo complicated to run that it needs a dealer and his computer to diagnose it, with so many electrical things to go wrong, and no aftermarket information.

Then the car ages to the point where it falls in price and to the sort of people who aren't prepared to pay dealer prices and like to maintain the cars themselves. These people are then turned off by the sheer complexity of the car and their inability to maintain it. Then price of the car then plumets.

Still it could just be me living out of the real world saying this

Exactly! This, plus the huge increase in the warranty costs is a recipe for shocking residuals imo. I've got a new M3 on order for next year, so i'm sure i'll suffer from this as well

Slight correction there - the grade of leather is the same (Nappa). You do get map pockets, glove box lid, dash etc. covered when you opt for fool leather (as well as the alcantara headlining).

By "grade" I actually meant the finish. The two finishes are obviously different in style.

Slightly different line, but how much do you think a one year old M5 will fetch in approx six months?

Thought I had sorted my dilema out about a new car and was going to purchase the new XK Jag Cab, but just had the offer of an M5 for Sep delivery. Trying to find out about residules after one year. I understand that no one has a crystal ball but do you think the car would lose more than 20% of it's purchase price in the first year with say approx 5 thousand miles on the clock?

Tony

So buy it Sept '06 and sell in Sept '07 with 5k miles on it...mmm if you paid list in Sept '06 you would be looking at £63-£65k or so...

I'd expect that car to be worth in the £48k-£55k region after that period time and given the availability of M5's by Sept '07.

No it won't, baz. It took the E39 longer than that to go down below £30k and this is a more expensive, better car. I can understand why you'd like it to, but if it di, BMW Finance would lose a fortune, given the residual values they are guranteeing (£40k+).

Ummmmm..... I bought my 2001 M5 at 3 years old for £31000 with 25,000miles its was £63,000 new

and before you say it,Facelift Le Mans Blue Full comms, DSP, Blinds and child seats only a couple of options not spec'ed (No wood or funny colour interiors)
So one of the more sort after combos.

Can't wait for bargain new M5 and now BMW have shat on post 3 year values with the new warranty, they will come down even quicker

Yebbut, the E39 M5 was launched in 1999.. Was it down to £30K in 2002 ? You bought yours 5 years after launch.

I agree with you about the increased warranty costs forcing down used prices though.

considering the car costs £46,735.47 GBP new in the USA....http://e60.net/information/2006_M5_Pr

£63,495 over here new makes the car massively overpriced by scam UK (BMW UK?) so come 3 years out of warranty these cars should be worth pre £40k.Also the new Nissan skyline gtr is released around this time the poser M5 brigade couldn't get rid of them fast enough on eBay to be seen in the newest hi tech high powered poser machine!

Not sure that in the UK the M5 customers are generally the same who want skylines?

BMW is as bad as every other car maker with regard to US vs UK prices.

As for your stupid comment about "the poser M5 brigade", wtf are you on? Silly little teenager is my guess (with a posting average just over 2 per month).

I have one available to spec now - delivery JuneJuly. Not sure I can bring myself to go for it now. The depreciation could be horrible at my 20K miles per year.

Only extra I would have is the BlueTooth. Just about everything else seems to be included.

When I took the M3 up to local BMW garage I was waiting for service and took a walk around a nice black M5 I didn't have time to read the spec sheet as it was sold and being prepared for pick up, however the price was still on the window £72,495.

I think the issue here with the most effect will be the warranty changes.

Who in their right mind is going to risk a four year old 60k mile E60 M5 now without the warranty?

Reading Nimmler's post I'm sure when referring to the 'poser M5 brigade' he meant those M5 drivers - and there must be a lot of them - who buy the car just to look good. I don't think he meant all M5 pilots.
But then, what do i know?
I'd also like to say that posting only very seldom, or very often, is no indication of post quality!

BTW Zod, I was wondering whether you would be considering the mods outlined in last month's EVO - namely, mega torque - on your car, or is the machine quite awesome enough as is? Certainly looks it
