Out of interest mind telling us what a year old car has lost in depreciation.

I assume your buying from a BMW dealer and not privately.

Not sure if that question was aimed at me regarding the M5 or my learned collegue with the M6.

As for the M5, list as new price with all the options she's got fitted was just over £73K & i'm buying a 12mth old example with 8000 miles for just over £15K less than that.

Paul,

Yes with EDC in 'comfort' mode and the box in auto mode programme 3 or 4 it is a very accomplished cruiser. Assuming you have programmed your M button, pushing it at the lights will give you the works, full on manual, 507bhp and EDC set to rock hard....light fuse and retire!

Alternatively you could try launch mode if you really want to scare your opponent and yourself...but have yet to try this.

To answer the depreciation question, can only speak for M6, 6 months old and -£20K approx so mid £60's. Can't see it dropping a huge amount further in the next 6-12 months....but then what do I know!! Great value now in my opinion, but as above!!

Damn, all was looking good until you mentioned "programmed your M button". I was kinda hoping it was pre-set to nuclear mode & i'd not need to tinker. Guess it's all fairly straight forward how to programme the button?? Think i'm going to need to be talking with an expert when i take delivery to set her up correctly.

As for Launch Control, i've read mixed reports stating that trying to be trick with LC actually gives worse 0-60 times than just sticking the car in 1st & booting it. Read in Evo i think that they could only just crack 5 secs to 60 in both the M6 & M5 when using LC but managed 4.7ish without it. Probably looks good to onlookers but seems to affect the sprint times. I may not bother with LC.

Sorry, was aimed at you. Sounds like you got a good deal. Can I ask if this was a main BMW dealer?

I wonder if this means a new M5 car will drop £30K in two years?

It was purchased through a main dealer & was owned by Mike Halliwell (owner of the Halliwell Jones Group), hence why the car is so highly spec'd.

Does appear their are a few available for under £60K which is a fairly sudden situation. I personally can't see them dropping another £20K in the next 12 months (at least i bloody hope not). I'd say 2yr old examples will be around the £48K mark, but of course dependent on specification.

Mine was already set up but if memory serves me correctly it is very straight forward to set up from iDrive anyway......unless of course you ARE related to the curly haired fat one (in which case I apologise as it is going to take you 1/2 an hour at least)

Not related (more's the pity) as i'm sure he'd be paying all cash for his M5.

I've got all next weekend to play (already cleared it with the wife) so i can set the car up at leisure. Just hope it reallt is straight forward & intuative. I'm hoping the manual is also good for instruction. I recall it took a few days to set my 535D up, but given most of the obvious stuff will be the same on the M5, that will save mucho time, it's just the specific M stuff that i'll no doubt get stuck on or get frustrated with.

I set up my M button in about 30 seconds the first time I sat in the car. There is nothing to it.

Steve, that's just what I needed to hear.

As brilliant as my limited experience of an M5 was, I can imagine the cog swappage being somewhat buggery in traffic (i.e. the majority of the time) so your insight is valuable.

How does the handling/damping compare to the old E39 M5? I've become accustomed to chucking a large barge around - could you expect to enjoy similar liberties in a B5?

Irrelevantly enough, I profoundly 'dig' the twin piped exhaust arrangement on an E60 to the quadularity of the M version.

B5 or not to B5?

The handling on the B5 is not that dissimilar to the E39 M5. It is fairly taut, but with a compliance that makes for relaxed driving. It responds well to a smooth, slow in fast out style, and the steering, whilst light, is very precise. It is not as quick to respond as the E39 M5 - you need to hint at the steering to avoid turn in understeer, but driven well it is really great. And it can be hustled too - it's one of those cars like the M5 that has great reserves of grip and balance. Once the power is down, the chassis feels beatifully balanced - that feeling that the car's attitude can be adjusted on the throttle. Ultimately it's body control is not as tight as the E60 M5, and perhaps also marginally less good than the E39.

The auto box with the button the steering wheel is great. I think it gives the best of all worlds - very smooth auto when you want to cruise and pretty rapid cog swapping in manual mode when on the move. I owned a CSL for a year, and when in the right mood I loved the SMG, but other times its lack of smoothness was frustrating (although I have to say the new M5 was a lot better).

In auto mode it does change up to 6th really quickly - usually by 35-40mph! - so it can be a bit languid - but in sport mode it holds the gears very well. However, I just switch to manual as soon as I see a NSL.

M5 or B5 I think is a very personal choice - both are truly wonderful cars, but quite different in character.

I agree the car looks great - I've attached a link below to piccies of mine if you're interested.

Kind regards

Steve

I test drove a B5 back to back with an M5 early last year. The B5 is impressive and the acceleration is just one big whoosh, but it didn't feel as taut as the M5. I was somehow much more aware that it was a big car than was the case with the M5. The M5 feels right coming from a CSL. Perhaps the B5 would feel more right coming from an E39. There's also the fact that I hate autoboxes against the B5.

Congratulations, fabulous cars. I'd love to see Evo do a 4 way test of all the M5 generations.

Completely off topic question for W8, did you or do you have a client (or friend) in Heaton Moor? I've no idea what you do BTW but shortly before we moved there was an evil sounding RS6 used to visit my next door neighbour every month or so last year(if so you can check the M5 pic in my profile to see who it is).

Just curious as I'm sure the reg plate was similar, and I'm sure that exhaust note wasn't standard.

Noted at the weekend that M6 seem to have a very small second hand premium over the M5, do people think this will further depress the M5 prices?

Don't think it will have any effect. The two are bought by different people.

Main effect on M5 prices will be availablity.

Considering the massive premium for a new M6, I think that the M5 may well overtake the M6 in the second hand market.

Utterly superb, mouthwatering. Many, many thanks.

Curving a ball in the general direction of this thread, an eyebrow was raised at EVO recently, as they just pitched in favour of the CLS55 AMG over the new M5 (and latest Quattroporte.)

The other, slightly heretic thought in relation to comfy barge storming concerns the (can I mention this?) upcoming Lexus LS600lh - ok, hardly the performance doyenne of this sector and yet, with an effective 375bhp, an EIGHT speed slusher and more premium, luxury lard than exists in le frigo of Paris Hilton, I did wonder about this as an option going forward: my old LS430 could just about wheeze to an indicated 160 so this new variant would surely be of the speed genus circa B10 V8S, non?

I thought the M5 won it with the CLS coming a close 2nd?

Not sure i've ever been to Heaton Moor. Used to drop in to see a friend in Wilmslow (on quite a big newish estate) a few times last year, but i don't think that's Heaton Moor.

Is that where Heaton Moor is??

I agree. The cars are aimed at different buyers & oddly i think it's the M5 that's aimed more towards performance car drivers who want a touch of practicality than the M6. I do love the M6, but i needed that extra bit of practicality so the M5 won. I think the list prices will stay about £15K apart, but older than 12mths the cars will be aligned, making the M6 a better value used car purchase. I just don't think their is as stronger market for the M6.

I must say my M6 is very practical. OK I can't get three kids in the back, but then that is a bit of a bonus. Three kids in a M5 is still a bit of a squeeze, it certainly was in my X5, hence getting a Disco3 as the family wagon.

Both cars are fabulous, and after driving mine for a few hundred miles, I'd have either in a heartbeat. Could be tempted by an M6 cab once the price drops a bit.

No, dont worry mustn't have been you. Do all RS6s rumble?
