can anyone tell me if there are any differences in the type of supplied engines in the m coupe? am i right in saying there is a 320bhp and 340bhp versions?

No, pretty sure they only came in 320 bhp.

2 versions S50 and S54
one had 321bhp the latter 325bhp

I thought the later ones had the S54 engine, and the earlier ones the S50B32 engine?

There are even more types of the Z3 M coupe...I'm already on my fourth M coupe I had 2x S50 with standard 321hp en a S54 with standard 325hp but that's because it can only do 74.000rpm change the chip and 8.000rpm and you have the same power as in the M3 E46 I know because I did just that
Now I have the only Hartge Z3 coupe in the world with 5.0 V8 and 6 speed
but original from BMW came also the US S52 with about 240hp

The Hartge? yes it does 0 to 200km/u in a bit over 13sec...160km/h in just over 8sec(on the clock)

Depends what you mean 'out perform'- Id say as a total ownership experience the Z would win hands down, might also not depricate as quick either.
