I've just ordered a new Alpine Ipod only head unit to replace the OEM cassette one, but I am wondering how good the original speakers are and whether they merit an upgrade?

The rear speakers do not have the enlarged enclosures, which I am told were an option on the E36.

Thanks,

Jez

Simple exercise here....

Remove door card - fairly simple exercise.

Inspect Nokia paper coned standard fit E36 speakers.

Draw your own conclusions.

They are utter utter shite.

Get yourself on e36coupe.com - we have an ICE section on the forum, and loads of knowledge about the best direct replacement speakers - loads of decent companies do them for the E36.

If it makes you feel any better - I have an E46 with the 'Hi-Fi' package... and that's just as bad.

OK, then! I assumed as it was a BMW, the OEM speakers would be pretty decent, but clearly not! I do have some MB Quart units from another car at home, so it's possible that some of those will fit, depending on the size.

I registered on e36coupe at the weekend, but have had no email to advise of account activation.

Agreed,

The 'stereo' in my bimmer is the worst I've had in any car and will be ditching it post haste.

Actually O/T but does anyone know how to disable the alarm that sounds when you disconnect the battery?

On a similar note I've got an M3 Evo with the HK upgrade and the BMW professional head unit, I've got an Ipod on it's way, what sort of sound quality should I be expecting using the radio link thing??

I'm not interested in people feeling the base from 3 miles away, and the quality is never going to be that good, its a convertible

Judging by what the wife has with her Denison Link and the 3.5mm jack connectors in my Elise and recently departed Focus St, I don't think you will be disappointed. It's not quite up to a decent cd player, but is pretty good and a million miles better than using an ITrip.
