Anyone driven E46 M3 and Evo VIII?
Discussion
I'm in the market for either a manual M3 or an Evo VIII. I know the Evo but haven't driven an E46 M3 (only the E36 version) and wondered how they compared on the road/track.
I'd be interested to know any opinions from people who have driven both or if there is a previous post I couls look at perhaps someone would point me in the right direction!
Thanks in advnce

I was also interested to see if anyone has compared them on either A roads or twisty B roads and what the verdict was - the Evo is certainly no motorway cruiser but comes into it's own when ther's proper driving to be done...
As I have an Evo IV I'm also used to crippling service costs, poor mpg and outrageous insurance so no worries there!

The BM is a more solid drive, less 'on the edge' and better as an all round form of transport. There is also a much deeper feel to the car and its engine.
The Evo is faster, but less well rounded. better steering, but not as simple to drive when wanting to relax or commute, or slide around!
The Evo is more of a toy, expensive one at that, where the BM is something more organic, requires a deeper involvement and grows on you more.
Ever wondered why so may Evo's are on sale with limited mileage....impossible to live with!!!

I'm well aware of the limitations of the Evo - I've done 35k miles in the last 3 years and used the car as an everyday vehicle. I was interested to see the comment about the M3 gowing on you more - I'm expecting it to be a bit more subtle and less manic then the VIII. One thing I do love about the Evo is the steering though...The Evo is faster, but less well rounded. better steering, but not as simple to drive when wanting to relax or commute, or slide around!

Hmmm I obviously need to test drive an M3!
I have owned both of these vehicles and have to advise you that you will get bored of the Mitsy realy quickly, people will frown upon you when you blast it through your local town at 25mph (rear Baffel removed)sounding like your doing 100 mph. When you close the door and it rattles, shakes your back teeth out when you drive over a rabbit dropping, get the boy racers try to race you at every set of lights you pull away from...... Then there's the Beemer, Close the door with a nice solid clunk, can be driven as slowly and comfotabley as you like and can be driven hard and will put up with serious track abuse all day, every day. sounds and looks destinctive, just a better car all round....buy a beemer and spend the extra cash on a car that will still be built well in ten years against a low budget Jap tub that has the build quality from Taiwan.... Best of luck.!

Have to say not noticed any of the above in 3 years of ownership - not bored with it, no funny looks, no rattles and boy racers don't bother me (I'm 40 and live in Surrey!). The suspension is a bit harsh but hey, you can't have everything... I've not driven an Evo but had a Jap imported Subaru STI version 7, similar performance to the Evo. I now have an e46 M3, I was going to get a 911 C4's but couldn't justify paying double the money for what is not double the car, anyway forget that, the M3 is a very capable car and has more than enough grip around the twistys for anyone unless you go around driving like a maniac, the M3 is also alot more refined than the Evo would be and a more enjoyable drive getting from A to B, the Evo's are quick but alot harder ride and are more raw rather than refined. The Evo would arguably get you from A to B quicker but it's how the M3 gets you there that was one of the key factors for me in choosing a car. Also the build quality is alot better and reassuring when you are out enjoying yourself, at the end of the day it's personal choice and what you want from the car.

(I'm 40 and live in Surrey!). The Evo is great value and cheap horse power, the E46 is now great value and can be bought for the same kind of money, have never seen a Evo 8 for sale with 85k on the clock though, they usualy by that time of life have had 5 or 6 sets of brakes, 2 or 3 engines, numerous cluches, the odd bit of interior trim that fell off and five 40 year old owners from surrey!

That's because they're only 3 or 4 years old!!! 85k would be VERY high mileage...E46CSL+E92M3 said:

I have an NZ Autocar mag test between the E46 M3 CSL and the Evo IX which I can probably scan for you if you like?
Basically their conclusion was Evo is quicker at lower speeds but the CSL would have the edge on top-end, the Evo is faster on bumpy twisty b-roads (especially in the wet) but the CSL is a more involving drive and only really loses out on corner exit traction. CSL is much more special and nicer interior etc, but as a second hand CSL is more than double the cost of a new Evo IX here they gave the win as the 'logical choice'.
(They did also mention that dynamically the Evo would leave a regular E46 M3 for dead)

That would make interesting reading however I can't afford either the IX or the CSL! I started a similar thread on the Mitsubishi Lancer Register BTW - lots of interesting replies there including people who have owned both...

I reckon I'll end up with the Evo VIII although I'll test drive the M3 first
Thanks for all the replies
