So you have an E46 M3, an E46 CSL and an E92 M3?
Yep!biggrin
I believe that as much as I believe you have a CSL with 404bhp, via nothing more than a chip..
A chip that gives a CSL 40 bhp extra... Why didn'y they just fit that to the standard M3 and hey presto, a CSL????
Here we go the Ladies, just see my adverts..... If you want to sell your 997 GT3 Rs, i am a cash buyer.....

Ps, the CSL has been run on a roling road at 404 bhp, waiting for a scanner to post the print out from WMS tuning.

Have a great weekendloser

Slightly off topic, but it's incredible that people are paying over list for the new E92 M3. I walked into my local dealer two weeks ago, placed an order and the car's being built in the next couple of weeks with delivery for November. Waiting list, what waiting list!

The 8MR has a better ride quality, maybe you should go for that. Their both totally different cars one is more laid back and the other has lazer like precision on the road. The steering on the evo is so amazing, its almost like a big go-kart.

The steering on the E46 M3 really lets it down. Feels very numb and disconnected at slower speeds but is something that you learn to live with. You could avoid this by getting the M3 CS though as it has the faster steering rack out of the CSL. Another problem with the M3 is its weight. You can really feel it through the tighter corners and tends to understeer when you're pushing on. To drive it as fast as an Evo 8 you really do have to be michael schumacher. For anyone whos not michael schumacher you've got no chance of keeping up with an Evo8 on a twisty road, even a 260.

All said and done though they are totally different cars and IMO, all round, the M3 is in a totally different league to the Evo on anything other than a tight, twisty or wet road. Put them on a fast road, dual carriageway or motorway at 100mph+ and the M3 will pull away from all but the FQ400 very quickly. 4WD and a big turbo is no compensation for a large naturally aspirated straight six engine. The sound and power delivery is just nowhere near as special. And whilst the latter will happily cruise at 160mph all day long, you know the little 4 pot turbo is going to be heavily stressed

I was in this situation 3 years ago and went for the M3. As an all-rounder it won hands down for me. Since then its been chipped and is running a fast-road geometry setup (which incidentally, hepls loads to get rid of the understeer and makes it even more capable)

It also has more toys and more admiration.

Evo's are fantastic point to point missiles though and an absolute blast...Until you want to chill out!

I started a similar thread on the Mitsubishi Lancer Register BTW - lots of interesting replies there including people who have owned both...

I reckon I'll end up with the Evo VIII although I'll test drive the M3 first

Thanks for all the replies

Sorry to dig up a relatively old thread now..but may aswell post for anyone else who reads this thread in the future.

Iv owned an evo for a while now...taken it from a standard gsr through to a 2.3 fuly forged fire spitting animal. And its capable of alot more...and one thing i'l say. I'l never buy another evo, and probably not another japanese performance car. Its been both the best and worst car iv ever owned. Fantastically fast, amazing levels of grip and since its been modified iv put a number of Supercars in they're places, 911 turbo's for example. But, in the previous 8 months its also cost me £12,000. Started with a cracked piston..hence the forged rebuild, then a dodgy transfer box, then faulty AYC pump. Nightmare. And they're all the same, especialy when modified. Problem after problem. Buy an M3 and be happy in the knowledge you bought a much better all round car.
