hey buddy,
i have had my evo a couple years now, its been my daily driver (50k miles in 2 and a bit years) and dare i say it has been supremely reliable the hwole time. they do have issues as most cars do, but like schnell says an evo is 85-90 % of an e46 m3..... and yet costs half the price!! really is a bargain!! in standard form it can be a "sports car", a "shopping trolley", a "motorway mile muncher" hell it even has a good go at being a refined Grand Tourer.... all in all its a very good compromise. i for one plan on keeping mine once i have sorted another daily driver, and transforming the evo to a fast rd car (stripped out, bilsteins,AP 4 pots etc etc).

i also have to agree with the above advice too, as GUY says, the vanos probs are way overhyped and you should deffo buy on condition rather than history. i wud also choose an evo over the 3 litre as it feels more modern inside (still like 10 years old), and more importantly the 6th gear (perfect for the motorway cruise). oh and deffo check e36coupe.com

oh and eagle F1s are prob the best tyre for the evo, i have also tried the M Pilot sport 2 which were good and my current rubber choice is the Toyo Proxes T1R.... i got these cos they were next day delivery and they were cheap (relatively £80 quid a corner).... grip wise i would say they are as good as the michelins if not grippier..... they are rumoured to be softer/less hard wearing the PS2's but we shall see .

To be fair in all my BMW E36 driving only had one breakdown. The Clutch Slave cylinderwent one morning on my 325. SWince then have driven over 200,000 miles in various M3's with no problems at all.
The SMG light came on a few times on my last E36 M3, but it was just low on hydro oil ;0)
