I have had my 2002 M5 for a couple of years and 30,000 miles, which other than standard servicing, nothing has gone wrong.
I did a week trip around Europe and covered 3000 miles trouble free.
The car feels engineered like a Swiss watch - and is still wonderful.

The running costs over three years for a used M5 are about the same as a brand new MR2 over same period. I remember EVO did a comparison on what you could get and run for £20,000, new and used.

Fuel consumption around town 16mpg open road 21-22mpg

Those are the kind of stories I much prefer to hear about...
3 months into my ownership and it is still all totally problem free.

How would you describe your drving? Is it mostly relaxed commuting like me with the odd blast or are you quite a 'hard' driver?

I'll describe my driving for you.

Daily drive into work is nine miles, limited traffic, all 40 limits, so its really just a warm up for it (cept when the roads are a bit empty, when I can and do press on) Probably don't exceed 5k rpm though. Evening trips (2 or 3 nights a week) are A roads, and I'm not scared of accelerating "briskly" and getting into some decent speeds and using the revs.

Weekend jaunts (every weekend) are a 250 mile round trip from Brum to Norfolk and back, so thats M6, A14 and cross country. Motorways are a breeze cruising at good speeds - the car is easily capable of cruising at 120 hour on end (not that I ever do of course). Once on the A roads, every overtaking opportunity is taken, frequently maxing out on revs (if I feel like it); slowing down is always smooth (I don't like lurching onto the brakes) and heel and toe downchanges are the norm. The pedals are perfectly positioned for it.

So, yes, it gets driven hard when possible, and gently when traffic dictates, but I still average 20mpg and I use super unleaded - its worth an extra 30 miles out of a tank for me, so the extra cost is justifiable to my wallet.

Just thought I'd add to the good stories on this thread.

I've had mine for a year and three months now, and done 14,000 miles, the only thing that has gone wrong was the traffic master started draining the battery and a local auto electrician removed the unit for £35 which solved the problem.

I've just had the inspection 2 service done at my local BMW dealer for £430, this years insurance renewal was £570 (39 years old, full no claims, no convictions) and I average 21-22mpg in mixed driving.

The car is going to need a few pounds spent on it in the next month or so. The front tyres need changing, £120 each fully fitted from Black Circles for Dunlop SP9000s and the front discs and pads are past their best, which is a bit sore at £500, but tyres and brakes are consumable parts which require to be changed sooner or later on any car.

The only other problem is the diff seal is weeping and will need changed, but that is a small job.

All in all, if you are sensible when looking, and buy an unabused, properly maintained and looked after car, then they are not the money pits that some people would have you believe.

Hard ish. You don't have to drive an M5 that hard to get the performance, just enjoy the torque.

I would say I have mechanical sympathy. The key is not to drive any car hard from cold and ensure that the car is serviced when it should be. A warm down is also important, wind down over the last 5 miles.

I drive in quite often Europe, I love the empty roads and I have covered 800 miles in day before now, on the Auto route past Lyon I had the cruise control on at 150 mph whilst my wife read her book! I also go to the Nürburgring. Oh yes and it is the family bus, I picked up my new born child from hospital in it.

I've just collected my freshly repainted, rebadged and renumbered old girl from the dealer after entirely too long.

The wheels are as dim of chromium as when first they did roll and although now, covered in 40 miles' worth of road salt and assorted detrius, she's in with old Matty at Offyourmarks for the full treatment on Wednesday.

Nearly 93,000 miles down the road and it's like conducting The Berlin Philharmomic whilst gently slipping Mdme Locklear a crippler.

Work your way gently up to 5th (not top,) avoiding harsh acceleration, adopting instead Burkard Bovenseipen 'slow burn' theory and as in an E34 version, bathe in the soft but inexorable moan of the leviathan awakening from slumber...

Momentum builds, you scan the horizon for the preventors of your transgression; ooh, yes, just a bit...er, oh...yeah...urgh... Now I'm slicing the line with Nigella, automotive flagrante delicto as the moment builds, rising, troughing, pounding the world, yes, like a battering ram: Judas Priest, other metal? Forget it - here is the soundtrack - press on, gorge on the flight, revel in the tide of why I love motoring, yes, this - THIS is IT...

I even got it sideways, in 2nd, at 15mph and then again, controlled with abandon another wanton, 20 mile an hour drift, all in the most progressive slo-mo you could possibly wish for.

This isn't just about having fun in, nor appreciating automotive perfection: it's about putting Komrade Livingslime in a barrel and then quoffing ale as the ignoble runt is launched into the abyss at Niagra.

You mean you haven't? What on earth is there left to debate...? wink

Let´s see..... I´ve had my M5 since August 2005.

I´ve had a blown engine => rebuild, broken gearbox, busted guibo, broken
differential, exploded performance clutch => broken starter motor, blown
plenum cover, exploded cooling fan => damaged radiator... the list goes on.

Great car - love driving it - never going to sell it.

I am in total agreement that mechainical sympathy has a major role in the longevity of key parts to these engines.
The M5 is no different to any other E39 model, apart from the obvious, and requires a gentle touch from cold. My E36 M3 EVO was also difficult to drive when cold and I beleive that this warming up and down process is also crucial to the VANOS system staying healthy.
I personally think that the rev counter lights go out too quickly and no stress should be put on the engine until the oil has reached 70c or more. I use the hidden menu in the cluster rather than the oil temp needle.
As you say, these engines do not need to be revved to get a lot from them.

I have only had mine for 3 months but am planning my 3rd visit to the 'ring, wont be tracking it, I think its a bit heavy for that, plus after my crash in '06 I think the Mrs would divorce me. frown I suppose she would have a point.
