For the OP: it is cold and damp most of the time at the moment. If you floor the accelerator in a powerful RWD car, you WILL break grip at any speed you are likely to be doing around town. If you think the M3 breaks grip easily, try an E60 M5.

I'd love to, thanks for the very generous offer! This Saturday is fine for me...

I'd apply more weight to the opinion in this thred of people who have owned M3's, some chaff to filter through for you IMO.

I found a *marked* difference going from Eagle F1's to Ps2 tyres. With the latter, provided I was smooth in input, I could apply WOT (maybe limited 80% in 1st) + redline in all gears in very wet+cold weather and I would never lose traction/have TC light up. In fact, I tell a lie, once I had them spin up at around 60 or so through standing water, it was planted WOT before then, but as the revs+torque rose they broke free - real easy to deal with and only happened once.

[In the dry, I would never lose traction unless I was rough (kicking accelerator as opposed to pushing it)]

A 350hp car on a wet road does NOT have to suddenly lose traction, even if you are using all that power.

So yes, IMO there may be a problem here. My first port of call would be to look at the RTABs + sspension as mentioned, but also, it may be useful looking at some different rear rubber if yours is not suited to the cold conditions.

Thanks for the responses guys.

That said, I've obviously ruffled a few feathers by saying the back end moved, sorry, but the car's there to be enjoyed and if the situation is safe I'll push the car to the limit.

If you haven't ever had the back end move, I suggest you get a diesel IMHO.

I dont think you ruffled feathers because you occasionally get the back end to go "side to side", you ruffled feather's because your surprised by this lol...What are you expecting a 343bhp RWD car to do..turn the traction control off...You'l have a whale of a time...Instead of going "side to side" you'l go "around in circles" You can then post another thread about that and make yourself look even more of a numpty. Sorry for the harshness...but its due.

Wet?? or wet and greasy with cack loads of salt and other crap on the roads?? sorry, but very easy to lose traction with healthy doses of throttle....thats why i love my m-trac button at this time of year...makes every roundabout fun (but with some safety net..)

appreciate that there could be something up with the car...but should always be expecting a bit of movement with 340bhp rwd when the roads are as covered in 'stuff' as they are now.

Blast from the past mate, this is an old thread bumped!

In my M3, and now my lotus elise can both be driven WOT through all gears to redline in current weather in a straight line without braking traction with smooth inputs.

more worn tyres at front would actually reduce oversteer ... the way you describe it I would guess it's it has to do with the way you do it...too abrupt with the wheel?
I find 19 inch tyres make the car go more suddenly and more unforgiving

mr petrolhead76, i had exactly the same thing when i bought my E46 M3. i was Rear trailing arm bushes, but watever you do dont replace them with BMW ones. (if you drive fairly hard) i went through 2 sets to be told that the Polyflex ones are half the price and much better designed!!

Wow, thought this was buried a long time ago - no longer have an M3 (purchased a 911) and it was the bushes that caused the problem. Hopefully that will kill it !
