2005 55 plate, £48,000 today, how much in 2 years time with 50,000 on the clock?

2 years out of warranty, so has to be somewhere around £30k'ish I guess?

ETA: in superb condition might be £35k on a stealer forecourt?

I'd agree with the above. I dont think they're selling too well at the mo, so I think they'll hold their value around that time/price.....

One of the performance bargains of the last decade...just sold my 55 plate weeping Awesome car!

In Autocar this week an article on the 997 S vs XKlardy somthing or other vs Maser. A subnote to the effect that the M6 wasn't included as all the others had it well beaten. I'm sorry but what an utter load of boocks. Fortunately I also get Evo too, so may cancel my subscription to Autocar...I think they are losing the plot!

Previous week new XFlardy something or other better than the 5 series....utter drivel!

Before you flame me....I now have two Mercs!! hehe

What they said about the M6 frankly brought the rest of the article into disrepute. Performance wise the M6 is a peer of the turbo not the 997S.

HTH, the sub-article re the M6 is/was shocking: totally contradicting Steve Sutcliffe's long term ownership file of the same from the same mag! Indeed, he ended up favouring it over a brace of considerably more traditional - and exciting [than this round of GT blubber, 997 excepted] - bona fide supercars. Which coincidentally, was a conclusion I shared during my period of pre purchase contemplations.

Disposable, cheap and glib hackery of the lowest order. Despite the bias, I'm sure Evo's conclusion is more pertinent.

Don't get me wrong, I am in the market for an M6 (think it may have been Hunttheshunts I just missed out on) but to compare it to a 911 Turbo is a joke. 997S fair enough (although even that beat the M6 on TG on an A road run), but headline figures apart and 911 Turbo is in a totally different class in terms of real performance.

I like the M6 and am seriously still considering one over a 997S becuase at current used prices you get alot of metal, performance and toys for the money. However, the 997 is a much sweeter and more involving drive.

No joke, seriously. I've done 38.5k miles in my 996TT X50, 500 miles in a 997S, a few VMAX laps in a 997TT, 5k miles in an E60 M5 (so I was used to the M car technostuff/gearbox settings etc). At a recent VMAX, I drove Derestrictor's M6 for half a dozen fast laps and it was quite superb. The 996/7 Turbo has more low down torque so feels quicker on the road, but once up in the rev range the M6 was just as fast, hence my commments of it being a peer of the turbo rather than the 997S.

wrt the Top gear IOM test, which car would you expect to be quickest when you take a Porsche 911 racer (source PH discussions of who the stig is at the time) and ask him to Hoon 3 cars over the Mountain section of the TT course in the rain....... I imagine if it were a dry road or if it were a BMW or an Aston driver doing the honours there may have been slightly different results?

My friend,

Buying, living and long term, comparative realities with both may convince you otherwise. The M6 has the measure of a standard X50 and thus is hardly disgraced by the Xenons of it's successor.

I can absolutely assure you of that.

TG's comparison was about as meaningful as anything involving it's chief protagonist. wink

Interesting comments Daz, although I think on the road the 911 Turbo is still going to be a good chunk quicker in pretty much any circumstance. Having just stepped out of my X50 and having driven a few M6s I was acutally a little dissapointed in the outright performce - not in a big way, I just expected a little more - that is why I was interested in Huntthehunts as his had the DMS upgrade (if it is who I am thinking of). What was more dissapointing was (and I hate the phrase but cannot think of how to put it better) the lack of 'feel and involvement' but maybe that is just because I have 911s in my blood now and is what keeps me going back to them?

Sorry John I completely overlooked your previous form! paperbag

I run 'em side by side and they are exquisitely different but the M6 will get into your blood like many an M car: the Tubi exhaust is a good tweak but once you get over the fact of it's physical size, I've found it has quite a lot in common with a Caterham, er, spiritually!

The repertoire is genuinely multifaceted but it does take time to 'learn' it's foibles (principally the peculiarities of the transmission) but back to back hoons convince me of both cars' astounding worth and remarkable value.

At the end of the day, it's more a case of sublime GT v sublime (road going) uber sports car. beer

Hi Jon, sorry about missing out on the car...collected yesterday (sniff).

In truth the DMS upgrade didn't seem to make a huge difference in normal driving, little bit more urge perhaps and no limiter. As I said at the time though I'd probably still do it again + exhaust.

I've not driven a 997 TT so can't comment but I did have a Roock tweaked 993 and 996. The latter sadly left me a bit cold. The former was outstanding.

996tt is perhaps a little too clinical for its own good, has more torque and is more nimble than the M6, but M6 performance at the top end is epic. Perhaps I'm getting too old, but running up close to the limiter in the higher gears of the M6 was actually quite scary....very Millenium Falcon (about the same size after all). I don't remember the 996 ever feeling that fast, but as I say I'm an old git now!

Personally I'd take the M6 over a 996tt, performance, practicality, better interior, more toys, awesome engine.....and I love SMGIII. That from a big 911 fan.

I'd take the 997, but the XK and the Maserati wouldn't see teh M6 for dust on the straight or in the bends.

Stupid article.

Oooh blimey, I had just started edging back to a 997 too. Mind changing again! I'll go and give the M6 another go and hopefully have chance to stretch its legs a little more than the last couple of test drives. Anyone with an M6 want to take me out and show me what it can really do without having a nervous salesman gripping the roof handle and directing you back to the showroom??

Hopefully late Feb, early March. If you get to one I'm sure DeR would take you out in the M6 at 185+.

It's a good day out where we've done many car comparisons etc, what's interesting is how close cars are sub 100 and how some cars only really show their additional strength at 140+. ie it's all pub talk if you are only going to drive them on the road within the limit.....
