The rubber perishes cos of the amount of heat they have to endure.
Give one a squeeze after a good run and I bet you lick your fingers and give little blows of breath on them like your granny used to after pulling out her tray of scones.

I recently bought a new one and it seems a lot more substantial. Almost as through it has the wire weave through the rubber to aid rigidity.

I just replaced the breather hoses on mine. The old rubber was very very soft. Old ones pulled off very easilly but the new ones took a bit more effort to get on, so I guess they lose strength over time.
Parts from a main dealer were around £10 each, and it was around a 10 minute job to do them both even for someone like me (think office based job...)
